We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented individual to join our team in a high-level administrative role that supports leadership in St. Louis County. In this fast-paced environment you will be asked to pivot from one task to another while providing a high level of customer service.

The typical schedule for this position is Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with a 37.5-hour work week. The incumbent may be asked to work 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. once or twice per week.

The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2026. The full salary range, including longevity pay, is $25.43 - $37.03 per hour.

Distinguishing Features of Work

An employee in this class performs information processing and constituent service tasks, assists with special projects, and provides administrative support to functions of the County Administrator and County Board members. Duties include supporting continuous improvement projects and County communications; processing correspondence; coordinating appointments and administrative schedules; gathering information on issues and concerns for administrative action; preparing materials for County Board meetings; reviewing and editing drafts of County Board letters; and responding to requests regarding County services. The work is performed under the direction of the County Administrator and assigned supervisory staff.

RARE: Lift-Push/pull while stationary up to 20 pounds; and Carry-push/pull while moving about up to 20 pounds.

Selection Process

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Pass/Fail):

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.

  • Four (4) years full-time paid verifiable administrative experience; OR equivalent education and/or experience as determined by the Director of Human Resources and Administration.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate personal computer-based systems.

  • Proficiency in operating word processing software.

  • Ability to type from clear copy at a rate of 40 w.p.m./net.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

Administrative Specialists provide high-level clerical support to elected county officials and administrators. The duties are often performed under short deadlines, demanding high accuracy and quick turnaround time. In this position, you will be drafting, reviewing and providing initial feedback on Board letters and memos about policies and protocols that aid in the decision-making process. Describe your comfort level and ability to review written information, comprehend the purpose of the document, make determinations of completeness, and offer preliminary feedback on information that will be presented to the County Board of Commissioners.

Administrative Specialists serve as the first point of contact for constituents who are reaching out to their elected County Commissioner. Sometimes, these contacts and communications are personal and emotional for the constituent depending on the nature of the situation. Briefly describe your work experiences and how you believe you are best qualified to respond to emotional or angry citizens and how you ensure excellent customer service under these types of circumstances.

The Administrative Specialist staff is responsible for routine updates and monitoring of assigned content areas of the Countys website and social media accounts. Please discuss your familiarity, comfort level and work experiences (if any) related to social media, web development, and potential forms of content (writing, photography, video).

Given the centralized role in county government, our Administrative Specialists are often asked to coordinate various types of events. These functions often involve drafting communications, employee and citizen outreach, and sometimes attending functions on behalf of our county.
