Reporting to the Assistant Director of Recruitment, the Admissions Counselor uses high-level customer service, relationship-building, presentation and analytical skills to recruit students in an assigned geographic territory; compiles reports/data that help management determine market priorities; and provides up-to-date information about the Winthrop experience to students, parents and high school counselors and advises them on admissions policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant experience in admissions or related student personnel area, customer service, marketing, sales, or public relations.
- Program coordination and public speaking experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
- Experience with SLATE customer relationship management system.

Job Summary
- Implements approved recruitment strategies and activities in managing assigned territory.
- Promotes and represents the institution to prospective students, their families and school officials at college fairs, recruitment events and information sessions.
- Assists in the development and execution of admissions-sponsored events.
- Evaluates undergraduate applications and renders admissions decisions in accordance with university and department policies.
- Meets with prospective students and provides accurate information on admissions, financial aid and curriculum to foster positive relationships between the student and university.
- Conducts interviews and counseling sessions for prospective students and their families and follows up by mail and telephone with prospective and admitted students.
- Initiates communication with prospective students regarding admissions and recruitment processes, activities and decisions.
- Represents Winthrop at high school and junior college day/night programs in South Carolina and surrounding states.
- Plans visits with high school guidance counselors and makes follow-up visits to schools as needed.
- Maintains a full travel schedule and follows State of South Carolina and Winthrop rules and policies on travel expenses.
- Provides financial counseling to students and families to help them understand their financial aid package and additional financial resources.
Travel/Overtime Requirements Up to 30% travel, including occasional nights and weekends. Telecommuting
Employees are not eligible for telecommuting/remote work during their 12-month probationary period. After that time, certain positions may be eligible for telecommuting/remote work at the discretion of the supervisor and in accordance with Winthrop policies.
