Job Description

Position Summary

The ACLS Instructor is a part-time, hourly position responsible for facilitating American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) courses for learners at the UMKC School of Medicine. Under the supervision of simulation center leadership, the ACLS Instructor delivers standardized, high-quality advanced resuscitation and cardiovascular emergency instruction in compliance with current AHA curriculum guidelines. This role supports the UMKC SOM mission to provide competency-based training to healthcare learners across the UMKC SOM enterprise.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Obtain AHA ACLS Instructor certification within 2 months of hire.
• Facilitate AHA ACLS courses in accordance with current AHA curriculum, including all required course components: didactic instruction, skills stations, megacode scenario facilitation, and written and skills testing.
• Prepare course space, equipment, manikins, and simulation resources prior to each session; restore and inspect all equipment after each session and report maintenance needs to operations staff.
• Evaluate and document learner competency against AHA ACLS performance standards. Provide specific, timely feedback to support skill acquisition and clinical reasoning.
• Complete and submit course rosters, completion records, and eCard certification documentation per center protocol and within required timeframes.
• Maintain current AHA ACLS Instructor certifications and complete all required AHA instructor updates and renewals.
• Complete center instructor orientation and any required alignment or standardization sessions. Adhere to all center policies regarding equipment handling, learner confidentiality, and course administration.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Advanced knowledge of AHA ACLS algorithms, pharmacology, and resuscitation science sufficient to facilitate scenario-based learning and answer learner questions at an advanced level.
• Ability to deliver clear, effective instruction to diverse healthcare learner populations including medical students, residents, nurses, and advanced practice providers.
• Strong facilitation and debriefing skills for high acuity megacode scenarios.
• Attention to detail in documentation, certification tracking, and compliance with AHA standards. Ability to work independently in a session-based, variable-schedule environment.

This position is a 12-month, part-time, non-benefit eligible, unranked academic position. Class offerings will vary depending on schedule.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Current AHA ACLS Provider and BLS Provider certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Current AHA ACLS Instructor certification in good standing.

Active or recent clinical practice in an acute care, emergency, or critical care setting (e.g., RN, physician, PA, paramedic, or equivalent). Previous experience instructing in an academic medical center, simulation center, or clinical education environment. Familiarity with high-fidelity simulation equipment and megacode scenario facilitation.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $32/hour

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
