Department/Unit:

General Surgery

Work Shift:

Day (United States of America)

Salary Range:

Albany Medical Center is launching a new clinical service within the General Surgery Division to provide High-Resolution Anoscopy (HRA) as an in-house diagnostic and therapeutic offering. This service will reduce external referrals, improve access to care, and expand the division's procedural capabilities for both inpatient and outpatient populations.

The Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) will play a key role in establishing and delivering this service. The APP will work directly with physicians to perform HRA screenings, manage follow-up care, and support the long-term monitoring of high-risk patients, including those who are HIV-positive or immunocompromised.

Salary Range: $117,766- $138,548

Essential Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Perform High-Resolution Anoscopy (HRA) for inpatient and outpatient populations in accordance with AMC protocols.

  • Conduct diagnostic evaluations for patients with abnormal anal Pap smears or at high risk for anal dysplasia or malignancy.

  • Assist in clinical decision-making regarding potential endo mucosal and rectal resections when indicated .

  • Collaborate directly with the General Surgery team to support the continuity of patient care.

  • Provide pre-procedure and post-procedure education, counseling, and follow-up.

  • Document all clinical activities, findings, and patient care plans in the EMR in a timely and accurate manner.

Program Development

  • Participate in the development and launch of AMC's new HRA screening program.

  • Support workflow design, patient flow, referral pathways, and scheduling processes to optimize service quality and efficiency.

  • Partner with Infectious Disease, Primary Care, and other referral sources to ensure a coordinated approach to patient care.

  • Assist in establishing clinical protocols, patient education materials, and quality standards.

Training & Education

  • Compl ete formal training through the International Anal Neoplastic Society (IANS) Clinical Workshop to gain competency in HRA.

  • Participate in ongoing education to maintain procedural quality and emerging best practices.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with the Surgical team, Nursing, Infectious Disease, and ancillary staff to ensure seamless care coordination.

  • Maintain clear, consistent communication with referring providers to support continuity of care and patient satisfaction.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.

  • Current NYS licensure as an NP or PA.

  • National certification applicable (ANCC, AANP, NCCPA).

  • BLS and ACLS certification.

  • Excellent communication, clinical judgment, and procedural skills.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating within a surgical team environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in general surgery, colorectal surgery, infectious disease, oncology, or procedural-based care.

  • Prior experience working with immunocompromised or HIV-positive patient populations.

  • Procedural experience (colposcopy, anoscopy, endoscopic skills, etc.) strongly preferred but not required .

Program Rationale & Impact

This new service addresses a significant gap in regional care by providing local access to HRA—a procedure typically available only in larger metropolitan areas such as NYC and Rochester. The APP's work will directly contribute to:

  • Early detection of anal dysplasia and malignancy in high-risk patient populations.

  • Improved long-term survival outcomes through earlier intervention and surgical planning.

  • Enhanced patient satisfaction by reducing the need for external referrals.

  • Recapturing patients currently referred to out-of-system providers, strengthening AMC's regional competitiveness.
