Program Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Hospital Medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Center is a structured post-graduate training program for Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs). The fellowship combines hands-on clinical experience, specialty rotations, and didactic education to prepare APPs for independent practice in hospital medicine.

Program Structure

The fellowship is divided into three core phases:

• Foundational Training - APPs receive structured onboarding, including clinical skills development, hospital workflows, EMR training, and supervised patient care.
• Core Clinical Rotations - Fellows gain in-depth experience in general inpatient medicine and specialty areas such as:
• Addiction Medicine
• Cardiology
• Gastroenterology
• Hematology/Oncology
• Infectious Disease
• Nephrology
• Neurology
• Palliative Care
• Community Hospitalist
• Hospitalist Cross-Coverage (Nights)
• Advanced Practice & Elective Rotations - Fellows tailor their experience by selecting electives in hospital medicine sub-specialties, including options such as ICU and interventional radiology.

Schedule & Work Hours

• Primarily Monday - Friday
• Night Rotations Required for cross-coverage experience (Monday - Thursday, 7 PM - 7 AM)
• Weekend Work Required for some electives

• Three letters of recommendation, one from a current program director or clinical faculty. If more than two years since graduation, one from a recent supervising physician or APP colleague.
