This role sits at the heart of high-acuity neurological care, where clinical precision and rapid decision-making directly influence patient outcomes. As part of a specialized neurocritical care team, you will help manage some of the most complex and dynamic cases in acute care medicine while advancing your expertise in a highly collaborative academic environment.
Join UVA Health's Neurocritical Care team and contribute to a closed Neurosciences ICU delivering advanced, multidisciplinary care. This role offers a distinctive blend of high-intensity ICU practice and intermediate care, creating both clinical depth and sustainable balance for experienced and early-career APPs alike.
The Role:
This position offers a unique dual-practice model across the Neuro ICU and Neuro Intermediate Care Unit, providing continuous exposure to both high-acuity and step-down patient populations. You will manage your own patient panel while collaborating closely with neurology, neurosurgery, anesthesia, and critical care teams in a fast-paced, academically rich environment.
On a typical day, you will:
Provide direct care to patients with intracranial hemorrhage, ischemic stroke, spinal cord injury, status epilepticus, and post-operative neurosurgical conditions
Manage a diverse and complex patient load across ICU and intermediate care settings
Participate in 24/7 ICU coverage, including rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays (40 hours/week)
Transition between high-acuity ICU care and intermediate care rotations with reduced night and weekend burden during non-ICU assignments
Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team including APPs, residents, fellows, and attending physicians
Utilize advanced clinical judgment in a fast-moving environment requiring real-time decision-making
Engage in a care model that emphasizes both clinical autonomy and team-based coordination
This is an ideal opportunity for an APP who thrives in complexity, values clinical ownership, and is motivated to deepen expertise in neurocritical care.
