Advisor for Student Success

Position Summary

The Advisor for Student Success supports the mission of the Student Success Center by fostering student achievement, persistence, and personal growth through proactive advising, intentional programming, collaborative campus partnerships, first-year student education, and coordinated student support initiatives. The Advisor will empower students to develop the skills, confidence, and connections needed to thrive academically, socially, and personally throughout their college experience.

The Student Success Center's goal is to ensure all students have the support needed to be as successful as possible while at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Advisors accomplish this by empowering students in three key areas:

Academics - Helping students create and implement academic plans, develop effective learning strategies, and utilize campus resources.

Engagement and Belonging - Encouraging participation in campus opportunities that foster meaningful relationships and a strong sense of community.

Self-Advocacy and Support Seeking - Guiding students to develop confidence in advocating for themselves and connecting with appropriate campus resources when needed.

The Advisor provides individualized student support, assists in designing and implementing student success programming, develops marketing and outreach initiatives, and collaborates with the Director to teach First-Year Experience (FYEX) courses that equip new students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful transition to college.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide proactive, holistic advising to assigned students through individual meetings, outreach, and follow-up.
• Assist students in developing academic success strategies, including time management, goal setting, study skills, and academic planning.
• Monitor student progress and identify students who may benefit from additional support or intervention.
• Connect students with appropriate campus resources, faculty, and staff.
• Maintain accurate records of student interactions and referrals.
• Co-teach First-Year Experience (FYEX) courses with the Director of the Student Success Center
• Assist in evaluating program effectiveness using participation data, surveys, and student feedback
• Develop engaging marketing materials for Student Success Center initiatives using print and digital platforms.
• Create content for social media, email campaigns, digital signage, and campus communications.
• Maintain a consistent and welcoming brand identity for the Student Success Center.
• Promote student success resources through creative outreach strategies that increase awareness and participation.
• Participate on institutional committees related to student engagement and success.
• Collect and analyze student participation and success data.
• Assist with assessment reports and strategic planning initiatives.
• Recommend improvements based on assessment findings and student feedback.
• Support institutional retention and persistence goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
• Minimum of 2 years advising experience
