Position Overview

The Compliance Engineer will lead and support product compliance activities from initial design and development through production and market release. This individual will ensure that new and existing products meet applicable regulatory, certification, environmental, and safety requirements.

The successful candidate will partner with internal engineering teams, suppliers, manufacturing groups, external test laboratories, certification agencies, and regulatory authorities to develop compliance strategies, manage product approvals, and reduce regulatory risk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead compliance activities for new and existing products across domestic and international markets.
  • Manage product certifications and approvals, including UL, ETL, CSA, CE, UKCA, IEC, FCC, and related global standards.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for certification agencies, third-party test laboratories, and regulatory authorities.
  • Interpret and apply standards related to electrical safety, mechanical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, energy efficiency, and environmental compliance.
  • Participate in product design reviews to identify and resolve compliance concerns early in the development lifecycle.
  • Coordinate compliance testing, sample preparation, technical documentation, corrective actions, and follow-up testing.
  • Perform and document product safety risk assessments in accordance with applicable safety standards.
  • Provide corrective-action recommendations and compliance guidance to design engineers.
  • Maintain technical files, declarations of conformity, certification records, test reports, and other compliance documentation.
  • Monitor changes to global regulatory requirements and evaluate their impact on current and future products.
  • Support manufacturing and supply chain teams during production changes, component substitutions, and supplier transitions.
  • Assist with regulatory audits, inspections, customer inquiries, and compliance-related investigations.
  • Provide training and technical guidance to internal teams, including Engineering, Quality, Operations, and Sales.
  • Perform additional compliance and regulatory responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 7 years of experience in product compliance, certification, regulatory engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong knowledge of North American and international product safety standards.
  • Direct experience working with certification bodies and third-party testing laboratories.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply technical standards, regulations, and certification requirements.
  • Experience supporting electrical safety, mechanical safety, EMC, environmental, or energy-efficiency compliance.
  • Strong documentation, organization, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple certifications, projects, and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Self-directed, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in both technical and hands-on environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with commercial equipment, appliances, industrial products, or electromechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of CE marking and European Union directives, including LVD, EMC, and RoHS.
  • Experience guiding products through UL or equivalent safety certification programs.
  • Familiarity with international market-access requirements.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems and product lifecycle processes.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing, laboratory, or product development environment.

Working and Physical Requirements

This position is primarily office-based but requires occasional hands-on work in laboratory and manufacturing environments. The Compliance Engineer may review products on production lines, prepare equipment for testing, and support technical evaluations.

Candidates must be able to travel up to 20% and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
