General Description of Work

Position Title: 9 month, Recurring, Intercultural Services Coordinator

Classification: AFT Staff

FTE: 1.0 on a 9 month cyclic contract

Schedule: 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday 8 AM-5 PM. September 16-June 15 annually. Occasional evening work may be required and scheduled in advance.

Job Summary

This Program Coordinator supports student leadership development, student-driven civic engagement, and campus engagement opportunities that promote the wellbeing, success, and advancement of Whatcom Community Colleges diverse student population. Working closely with the Intercultural Services team, student leaders, and campus partners, the Program Coordinator develops, coordinates, and facilitates innovative co-curricular and extracurricular programs, student organizations, service-learning opportunities, and student-led conferences that foster identity development, civic responsibility, and meaningful connections across the college community. The Program Coordinator ensures that all programs are collaborative, inclusive, and aligned with the colleges commitment to supporting the engagement, growth, and success of diverse learners.

Reporting Structure/Supervisory Relationship

  • This position reports to the Director for Student Engagement.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Supports the Simpson Intercultural Center staff, Associated Students of Whatcom Community College (ASWCC), student unions, associations, and clubs in advancing student engagement, leadership development, and campus involvement.
  • Plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates Simpson Intercultural Center programs, services, and events, including student orientations, peer mentoring, leadership development opportunities, student-led conferences, workshops, and meetings, in collaboration with the Director and Associate Director.
  • Advises and supports student leaders in planning programs, achieving learning outcomes, documenting student engagement, and assessing program effectiveness.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships with college departments, faculty, staff, students, and community organizations to implement high-impact student engagement, civic engagement, and intercultural learning opportunities.
  • Supports the Associate Director of Intercultural Services in coordinating the daily operations of the Simpson Intercultural Center and ensuring a welcoming, inclusive, and student-centered environment.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with campus and community stakeholders to expand opportunities for student learning, leadership development, and intercultural engagement.
  • Prepares, develops, and manages written communications and promotional materials for the Simpson Intercultural Center, including website content, social media, newsletters, marketing materials, and press releases, in collaboration with Marketing & Communications and other college departments, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging in all programs, services, communications, and professional practices.
  • Serves on department, division, and college committees and represents Whatcom Community College on community, regional, and statewide committees, partnerships, and professional organizations, as assigned.
  • Performs other related work of a similar nature and level.

  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and support programs, events, and student engagement activities while managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to support, mentor, or guide student leaders, peer mentors, volunteers, or student employees.
  • Skill in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication, including active listening and communicating effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Skill in problem-solving, organization, and time management, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • The ability to actively contribute to a work and learning environment that treats everyone with respect and dignity, while engaging diverse perspectives, backgrounds and experiences to enhance the Colleges mission, vision, and promise.

Working Conditions/Environment

  • Work is performed in a standard indoor office environment with frequent interruptions, shifting priorities, and multiple deadlines. The position requires extended periods of sitting and computer use, along with regular phone, email, and in-person interactions. Occasional movement throughout the office, campus, and community may be required as needed. Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds is required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree from an institutionally accredited college or university

  • Two years demonstrated experience planning, coordinating, or supporting events, programs, or activities.

OR

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient for the person to perform the duties.

AND

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including pre-scheduled evenings, mornings, and weekends, to support events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an institutionally accredited college or university.

  • Bilingual skills (Spanish, Ukrainian, Punjabi, Russian, Mandarin, American Sign Language or Unified English Braille).

  • Experience working with college students or historically underserved and underrepresented communities through employment, internships, volunteer service, or leadership roles.

  • Experience planning programs, events, or student engagement activities.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and web-based tools to support communication, marketing, and program coordination.

  • The ability to take action to learn and grow.

  • The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.

Licensure, Certification & Other Necessary Requirements

  • Employment contingent upon passing a criminal background check and sexual misconduct review.
  • Occasional travel to meetings, conferences and training sessions may be required.

Salary

  • This is a 9-month, Recurring, full-time AFT (American Federation of Teachers) Staff represented position with a salary range (Coordinator Level) of $4,250.00-$4,928.00 monthly.

Benefit Package

  • The position comes with a full benefit package, including health, dental, life, long-term disability insurance and a retirement plan.

  • Accrues 8 hours per month of sick leave and 16 hours per month vacation leave.
