Veterinarians throughout the Midwest refer animal clients to the Veterinary Health Center for specialized diagnoses and treatment. With sophisticated therapeutic equipment that includes an underwater treadmill, advanced imaging techniques, and groundbreaking equine lameness diagnostic equipment, we are a center for animal healthcare.

The Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care (SAECC) service is seeking an experienced and motivated Sr. Veterinary Technician and After-Hours Shift Supervisor to provide leadership and operational support for a team of veterinary technicians and assistants in a fast-paced specialty and emergency hospital setting.

This position plays a key role in supporting patient care, staff development, workflow efficiency, and service operations. The Shift Supervisor serves as a clinical resource, coordinates daily staffing and patient flow, promotes adherence to hospital policies and procedures, and works collaboratively with veterinarians and hospital leadership to ensure exceptional patient care and team performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide direct supervision, guidance, and support to veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and students during assigned shifts.
• Coordinate daily staffing assignments and workflow to ensure efficient patient care delivery.
• Serve as a clinical and operational resource for team members in emergency and critical care settings.
• Assist with onboarding, training, mentoring, and development of new and existing staff.
• Support performance management initiatives, including coaching, accountability, and employee engagement.
• Foster a positive culture of communication, teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with faculty clinicians, house officers, technicians, and hospital leadership to address operational needs and patient care priorities.
• Monitor compliance with hospital policies, safety standards, and medical documentation requirements.
• Participate in quality improvement projects, process development, and service initiatives.
• Assist with scheduling, staffing coverage, and shift operations as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Shift

This position will be responsible for working and supervising after-hours shifts for the SAECC service. SAECC operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Incumbents will be asked to work weekend and holiday shifts in the course of their responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Program. Licensure as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of Missouri, or eligibility to obtain Missouri Licensure within 6 months after start date.

Preferred Qualifications

Successful candidates will exhibit the following experience, skills, and core competencies:

• Prior experience in a veterinary emergency and/or critical care setting.
• Previous supervisory, leadership, training, or mentoring experience.
• Ability to lead teams and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience working in a specialty or teaching hospital environment.
• Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to professional development and team building.
• Detailed-oriented and well organized to take medical histories, carry out instructions, document patient statistics and update records.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $27.50 to $29.00 per hour, additionally shift differential is available for qualifying evening and overnight shifts
