Job Summary:
The After-School Counselor at our Martial Arts School is responsible for supervising and engaging students in an enriching and safe environment after school hours. This role combines the principles of martial arts with the care and support necessary for young students. The After-School Counselor will guide students through training, lead recreational activities, and foster positive behavior while ensuring the safety and well-being of all children.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise Students: Provide constant supervision to students during after-school hours to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Prepare for Martial Arts Classes: Maintain the schedule and ensure that students are changed and ready to engage in class.
- Assist with Homework Room Readiness: Support students by providing guidance where necessary and helping them develop study habits and time-management skills.
- Lead Recreational and Developmental Activities: Organize and lead non-martial arts activities such as arts and crafts, games, team-building exercises, and physical fitness routines.
- Foster Positive Behavior: Reinforce positive behavior, self-discipline, respect, and teamwork in line with the core values of martial arts.
- Build Relationships with Students: Create a supportive and engaging environment where students feel comfortable and motivated to participate in all activities.
- Enforce Safety Standards: Ensure all martial arts equipment and facilities are safe and properly maintained. Follow all safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Collaborate with Staff: Work closely with other counselors and martial arts instructors to coordinate activities and ensure a cohesive and structured after-school program.
- Maintain a Clean Workspace: Staff are assigned cleaning duties to upkeep throughout the week.
- Promote Martial Arts Values: Encourage students to embrace martial arts philosophies such as courtesy, integrity, self-control, perseverance, indomitable spirit, and loyalty both inside and outside of class.
- Driving: May be trained to drive routes and pick-up children in the 14-passenger bus
Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in Education, Child Development, or related field is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience working with children, especially in a sports, recreational, or educational setting, is preferred.
- Martial Arts Knowledge: A basic interest of martial arts is ideal, but not required. Candidates should have a willingness to learn and a passion for sharing the values of martial arts.
- Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to manage groups of children, and a positive, enthusiastic attitude.
- Certifications: CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain); Martial Arts certifications are a plus.
- Background Check: Must be able to pass a background check as required by the school or organization, as well as have a clean driving record
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to engage in physical activities with children, including martial arts training, fitness activities, and games.
- Ability to move around and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry light equipment and materials (up to 20 lbs).
Working Conditions:
- After-school hours, typically from 2:30pm to 6:30pm.
- Occasional evening or weekend events for demonstrations, tournaments, or special programs.
- A dynamic, team-oriented environment with opportunities for professional development and training.
