ABOUT THE JOB: Afternoon Snack Workers work between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and they work up to 2 hours per day (Monday - Friday) during school session.Persons in these positions may be able to work additional hours to cover employee absences. Under general supervision, prepares, sets up and serves afternoon snack at a school; maintains kitchen in a clean and sanitary condition; and performs related work as assigned.

JOB DUTIES: Prepares afternoon snack by heating a variety of food items according to menus and instructions; sets out juice, milk, fruits, vegetables, and condiments; oversees and serves afternoon snack to students; cleans and stores food service equipment and supplies; observes safety and sanitation procedures and practices for kitchen and food service work, including food preparation, monitoring food temperatures, serving, storage, and handling; compiles food items served andleftover counts; and inputs production data into a computer program; operates heating and refrigeration equipment in a safe manner and lights pilots as needed; and coordinates with site staff and volunteers to ensure program requirements are being met.

Education and Experience: Some paid experience in food preparation and service is required. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

CERTIFICATE: Must possess and maintain a valid California Food Safety Certificate. New appointees must obtain the required certificate within 90 days following appointment.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING….

Knowledge of: Proper use of basic kitchen equipment and tools; proper sanitation and safety methods used for food handling, equipment, and preparation areas; and appropriate food and refrigeration temperatures.

Ability to: Understand, be understood, give and carry out instructions spoken and written in English; read and understand menus, recipes and labels; evaluate taste and appearance of foods; operate equipment in a school kitchen; perform basic math such as addition and subtraction; evaluate operational needs and order supplies, as appropriate; maintain written and numerical records; communicate effectively with administrators, staff, students, teachers, and volunteers; work independently without on-site supervision; and operate a computer and related programs.
