Agentic Engineering Specialist
Remote, MST hrs.
4-month contract
Pay Rate: $65.00 - $80.00per hr.
The Missionary Work Portfolio is seeking a single, highly capable contract engineer to accelerate the adoption of AI-enabled (agentic) engineering practices on the Missionary Portal team. The engagement runs from award through December 31, 2026.
The intent is not additional hands on a backlog. It is a specialist who rapidly assesses how the team works, recommends and implements AI-integrated changes to our processes and workflows across the stack, and then uses those workflows to raise the team's delivery velocity. We expect a fast ramp and concrete workflow recommendations within the first weeks.
Role Profile & Priority
Candidates will be considered against the following priority order. A single exceptional specialist on a shorter, high-impact engagement is preferred over a broader but less capable resource.
- Agentic engineering specialist Primary contribution is integrating AI/agentic tooling into engineering workflows and lifting team throughput.
- Agentic validation specialist Focus on AI-assisted test generation, coverage, and verification to relieve QA constraints.
- Development-focused specialist Strong AI-fluent full-stack engineer who can drive modernization velocity where deeper specialist expertise is unavailable.
Scope of Work
- Assess current team workflows and identify gaps where AI/agentic tooling can improve speed and quality.
- Recommend and implement changes to processes and workflows, integrating AI throughout the development lifecycle.
- Apply those workflows directly to team deliverables to demonstrate and drive measurable velocity gains.
- Support AI-assisted modernization and migration work across a codebase undergoing active framework and platform upgrades.
- Operate within the team's existing toolchain and standards, including PR and pipeline conventions.
Environment & Technology
Missionary Portal is a large, actively modernizing system. Candidates should be comfortable working across coexisting legacy and current generations of the stack:
- Frontend Angular (legacy AngularJS through current Angular 18+) and a newer React 19 / Next.js 15 track; TypeScript.
- Backend Java / Spring Boot services (legacy Boot 2.x / Java 11 through modernized Boot 4.x / Java 25), Maven.
- Data Oracle as the system of record.
- Runtime Cloud Foundry (legacy) and AWS serverless (Lambda, Terraform, CloudFront); Python Lambdas.
- Build / tooling Azure Pipelines CI, GitHub source control, Azure DevOps work tracking, JFrog Artifactory; automated testing via Playwright and Vitest.
- AI tooling Claude is the organization's primary AI coding tool; candidates should be experienced with agentic/AI-assisted development.
Required Experience
- Demonstrated, hands-on use of agentic/AI-assisted development tools to deliver production work not familiarity alone.
- Track record of introducing AI-integrated workflow or process changes that measurably improved a team's delivery.
- Experience with AI-assisted modernization or migration across polyglot, multi-generational codebases.
- Full-stack fluency sufficient to work across the environment described above.
- Ability to ramp quickly and produce actionable recommendations early in the engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience implementing agentic engineering practices across software development teams.
- Experience with AI-assisted test generation, automated validation, and test coverage.
- Hands-on experience with Claude or similar AI coding and agentic development platforms.
- Experience modernizing large enterprise applications across multiple technology generations.
- Experience with Java/Spring Boot and modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks.
- Experience with AWS and serverless architectures.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks.
- Experience introducing new AI-enabled engineering practices within established development organizations.
