NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS). These experienced professionals provide administrative, scientific, and technical support to the Agricultural Research Service through the Experienced Worker Program (EWP).

The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an ?at-will? relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee.

PLEASE NOTE: An ?Enrollee? is not a federal employee, nor an employee of NEW Solutions. An ?Enrollee? is a participant in a grant program established through a Cooperative Agreement funded by the agency and administered by NEW Solutions. The enrollee shall not sign federal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. The enrollee shall not make decisions on federally based research on behalf of Government policy makers, and the enrollee shall not supervise any Government employees.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience in lab and field sampling and processing. OR BA/BS Degree

  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel
Duties:

Provides field and laboratory support for the Peanut and Small Grains Research Unit.The enrollee shall not sign federal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. The enrollee shall not make decisions on federally based research on behalf of Government policy makers, and the enrollee shall not supervise any Government employees.

  • Assist scientists with collecting, processing, performing required analysis and measurements of and on biological samples in the field and laboratory, then recording and checking all generated data. Work with the scientists to make sure all planned research activities are being completed on schedule and with the requisite level of precision and accuracy.   85%
  • Provide training to other technicians on proper research techniques for procedures that are regularly performed in the field and laboratory.   10%
  • Coordinate with the scientists and other technicians to make sure personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies are available and well prepared so that all the planned research activities can be accomplished smoothly and on time.   5%

Other:
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Position requires observing laboratory and field safety protocols. Following animal care protocols. Demonstration of use of lab and field equipment by location personnel. Any required safety training will be provided by the agency to the enrollee.
  • Required Safety Gear: Standard PPE such as lab coat, safety glasses, gloves as needed along with any other safety gear required for position/work.
  • Safety Gear Use: while observing laboratory and field safety protocols, following animal care protocols, and demonstration of use of lab and field equipment.
  • Physical requirements: The enrollee performs activities involved in the collecting of biological specimens. May include stooping, bending, reaching, and active walking. The enrollee may occasionally be required to do physical activity while wearing a respirator which requires extra effort. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
