The City of Fort Worth is one of the fastest growing large cities in the U.S. Our employees serve the needs of over 1,000,000 residents, promoting our values of exceptional customer experience, mutual respect, embracing our diversity, continuous improvement, ethical behavior, and accountability.

An AI Developer job is available with the City of Fort Worth FWLab department''s Analytics & Intelligence (A&I) Division. This role sits within the Data & AI (DAI) team and serves as the City''s hands-on builder of AI agents, bots, and automations that help departments work more efficiently. The AI Developer partners closely with the DAI team''s analysts, the Business Strategy & Performance (BSP) team, and Information Technology Solutions (ITS) AI architecture team, turning departmental process challenges into practical automated solutions using tools such as Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry. With 28 departments seeking AI-enabled solutions, the ideal candidate is a builder who works well with ambiguity and imperfect data, is eager to grow their own skills alongside a young and fast-moving AI program, and is committed to growing the skills of the workforce the City already has.

Work Sample Requirement: As part of the interview process, candidates must present an AI product, agent, or bot they have personally built, such as a live demo, recorded walkthrough, or portfolio/code sample. Candidates unable to demonstrate hands-on work they have built will not move forward in the process.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with course work in Computer Science, Finance, Economics, Public Administration, Business Administration, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Four (4) years of experience required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience building bots, automations, or AI agents (e.g., Copilot Studio, Power Automate, Microsoft Foundry, or RPA tools) that have solved a real business problem, even outside a formal "AI Developer" title
  • Proficiency with data and scripting tools (e.g., Python, SQL, Power BI) and comfort working with decentralized or imperfect data sources, such as departmental datamarts, rather than a single unified warehouse
  • Demonstrated ability, or strong potential, to translate a manual or repetitive process into a working automation and explain its value (time saved, cost avoided, capacity gained) to non-technical stakeholders

The AI Developer job responsibilities include:

  • Designs and builds AI agents, bots, and process automations in partnership with departments and the DAI and BSP teams
  • Works directly with departments across the City to identify manual or resource-intensive processes and assess which are strong candidates for automation
  • Partners with ITS''s AI architecture team to ensure solutions align with citywide AI governance, security, and platform standards, and to deploy and support AI agents once built
  • Builds and maintains AI bots and process automations using the City''s existing internal data sources, adapting to a decentralized data environment while flagging opportunities for improvement
  • Maintains a running record of completed work and outcomes, reporting progress and impact to division leadership on a regular basis
  • Identifies where automation can help departments absorb growing workload without adding headcount and communicates those opportunities clearly
  • Documents completed work and technical approaches so solutions can be reused or adapted across departments and teams
  • Works independently to research, test, and responsibly implement new AI tools and approaches, exercising sound judgment and escalating governance, data, or security questions to leadership as needed
