Position Summary
The AI Ethics Subject Matter Expert (SME) provides expert guidance on the ethical design, development, testing, and employment of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems in support of the program. The AI Ethics SME advises leadership and technical teams on Responsible AI (RAI) principles, identifies and closes ethical and policy gaps, and leads exercises that stress-test AI systems and decision-making processes against DoD RAI standards.
Required Experience
Minimum of 8 years of related Information Technology (IT) experience, including at least 5 years focused specifically on artificial intelligence.
Minimum of 2 years of expertise spanning cybersecurity, human factors, ethics, and policy.
Minimum of 2 years designing and facilitating Responsible AI (RAI) Tabletop Exercises.
Minimum of 2 years conducting RAI Gap Analyses for the Department of Defense (DoD) and scoping Courses of Action (COAs) and related projects.
Required Education
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Applied Ethics, Artificial Intelligence Ethics, Data Ethics, or a related technical field.
Security Clearance
Must hold a Top Secret (TS) clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.
Key Responsibilities
Provide subject matter expertise on AI ethics, Responsible AI (RAI) principles, and DoD AI policy to program leadership and technical teams.
Design, plan, and facilitate Responsible AI Tabletop Exercises to evaluate ethical risks and decision-making in AI-enabled systems.
Conduct RAI Gap Analyses to identify shortfalls in ethical, policy, and governance frameworks, and recommend actionable Courses of Action (COAs).
Support the integration of ethical, legal, and human-factors considerations throughout the AI system development lifecycle.
Collaborate with cybersecurity, policy, and engineering stakeholders to align AI development with DoD Responsible AI guidelines and applicable regulations.
Develop and deliver briefings, assessments, and written reports summarizing findings, risks, and recommendations to government and program stakeholders.
Stay current on evolving DoD, federal, and industry standards related to AI ethics, safety, and governance.
