Job Title

AI Software Engineer

Length

6 months to start, likely extension

Project Scope

Our Client is modernizing its internally developed APT application by gradually moving business logic out of SQL Server stored procedures and ColdFusion components into a Node.js service layer. The migration will be completed incrementally, with ColdFusion and Node.js running side by side while functionality is transitioned piece by piece.

The engineer will be responsible for:

  • Reading existing ColdFusion components
  • Understanding SQL stored procedures
  • Extracting business logic from SQL Server
  • Rewriting that logic in Node.js
  • Building a reusable Node.js service layer
  • Creating REST APIs consumed by the existing application
  • Supporting an incremental migration without disrupting production

Technical Environment

Languages & Frameworks

  • Node.js
  • ColdFusion
  • T-SQL

Database

  • Microsoft SQL Server

Architecture

  • REST APIs
  • Service layer architecture
  • Azure-hosted application
  • Queuing and Pub/Sub messaging
  • Not microservices

Top Skills Required

Top Required Skills (In Order)

1. Node.js (Highest Priority)

The engineer will spend most of their time:

  • Building Node.js services
  • Translating legacy business logic into JavaScript
  • Creating REST-based service endpoints
  • Designing a maintainable service layer

This is primarily a backend Node.js role.

2. SQL Server / T-SQL

Candidates need strong experience with:

  • Complex stored procedures
  • Business logic in SQL
  • Performance tuning
  • Reading and understanding legacy database code
  • Refactoring SQL-based logic

This is significantly more advanced than simply writing SQL queries.

3. Agentic AI Engineering

They're intentionally looking for engineers who leverage AI as part of their daily workflow.

Examples include:

  • Claude Code
  • Cursor
  • GitHub Copilot
  • OpenAI Codex
  • AI-assisted code translation
  • AI-assisted refactoring

The expectation isn't that AI replaces engineering judgment, but that candidates know how to use agentic tools to accelerate modernization work while validating the results.

4. ColdFusion (Helpful, Not Required)

ColdFusion experience is a plus, but not a deal breaker.

The engineer primarily needs to:

  • Read existing ColdFusion code
  • Understand what it does
  • Translate that functionality into Node.js

The hiring manager specifically noted that AI makes the learning curve much less of a concern.

Biggest Technical Challenges

This isn't simply translating code between languages.

Candidates will need to:

  • Reverse engineer legacy business logic
  • Translate SQL stored procedures into maintainable Node.js services
  • Convert ColdFusion functions to Node.js
  • Work without automated test coverage for stored procedures
  • Validate functional parity through careful analysis and testing
  • Maintain compatibility while ColdFusion and Node.js coexist
