Air Quality Permitting Services Section Supervisor

We are recruiting for the Section Supervisor position within the Permitting Services Section of the Department of Environmental Quality's (DEQ) Air Quality Bureau. The Permitting Services Section is one of four sections within the Air Quality Bureau that are tasked with regulatory oversight and maintaining healthy air quality for a thriving Montana. This position is responsible for the leadership and management of programs and supervision of staff in the preparation and issuance of air quality permits, including environmental review pursuant to the Montana Environmental Policy Act, thereby ensuring impacts from new or modified sources of air pollution comply with the laws, rules, and applicable health and welfare-based federal and state air quality standards.

The Permitting Services Section Supervisor leads a diverse group of professionals by creating a culture of excellence, professionalism, and collaboration. The supervisor serves as a mentor and role model for staff and is on the forefront of air quality permitting review and approval in Montana.

The Permitting Services Section Supervisor is responsible for the implementation of agency, division, and bureau direction and the oversight of day-to-day operations of the section. This position leads staff to accomplish goals by clearly and effectively communicating priorities and expectations to personnel, develops and coordinates annual work plans with personnel, provides meaningful and timely feedback to personnel, manages personnel, implements a professional growth program, and aligns section operations with DEQ's strategic plans. The person in this position works with the Bureau Chief to establish direction, identify strategy, inform on issues of interest/controversy, and assess effectiveness of operations.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of state and regulatory framework associated with air quality, as well as being skilled with communication and effective leadership. Minimum requirements include a bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, life science, chemistry, physics, or a related degree in natural resources science and three (3) or more years of progressively responsible experience in an environmental field. Demonstrated experience in successfully leading people is required, although this may be from roles other than formal supervisory experience.
