General Description and Classification Standards:

The Grounds Maintenance Technician I is responsible for assisting with routine grounds maintenance activities to help ensure airport grounds, roadways, pedestrian areas, parking areas, and landscaped spaces are safe, clean, and visually presentable. This position supports airport operations by performing assigned tasks, assisting with inspections, and responding to service requests in both secured and non-secured airport environments under established procedures and supervision.

Supervision Received:

Works under direct supervision and follows established policies, standard operating procedures, and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience -

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • At least two (2) year of experience in grounds or landscaping maintenance, including exposure to commercial, municipal, or industrial grounds operations or another related field.
  • Must obtain an AMA Certification with 6 months of employment and maintain annually
  • Must demonstrate the ability and competency to advance to Grounds Maintenance Technician II within 18 months of Hire.

Licensures and Certifications - Valid Georgia driver's license.

Preferred Requirements - Class A CDL, Class B CDL, Trade Certifications

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily outdoors in a large, active airport environment and involves exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and inclement weather. The position requires frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, and operating grounds maintenance equipment and vehicles. Work may be performed in both secured and non-secured areas, including roadways, parking areas, landscape spaces, and operational service areas. The role may involve exposure to noise, dust, traffic, chemicals, and moving equipment. Employees may be required to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergencies or weather-related events as operational needs dictate.

Lifting Requirements:

Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Assist with routine grounds maintenance activities, including mowing, edging, trimming, debris removal, pressure washing, and seasonal landscape upkeep.

Assist with visual inspections of airport grounds, roadways, sidewalks, parking areas, medians, and landscaped spaces to help identify safety hazards, maintenance needs, and service deficiencies and report findings as directed.

Assist with inspections and routine maintenance of grounds maintenance vehicles, trailers, and equipment to support safe operation and proper documentation.

Support assigned grounds and exterior projects, including surface sealing, pressure washing, weatherproofing, and maintenance activities during inclement weather events under supervision.

Provide grounds maintenance assistance during airport emergencies or weather-related events by helping remove hazards, secure affected areas, and support operational response efforts

Maintain situational awareness while working in secured and non-secured airport areas and comply with airport safety and security requirements.

Operate grounds maintenance equipment and heavy machinery, including mowers, sweepers, loaders, tractors, skid steers, dump trucks, and related attachments, in accordance with safety and operating procedures.

Assist with maintaining landscaped areas, turf, trees, and plantings to ensure exterior spaces are safe, orderly, and visually presentable.

Assist with operating street sweepers, vacuum units, and debris collection equipment to maintain cleanliness of roadways, parking areas, service roads, and pedestrian corridors.

Follow all applicable safety regulations, environmental requirements, and airport standards during grounds maintenance activities and equipment operation.

Accurately document assigned grounds maintenance activities, inspections, and equipment use using established work order or tracking systems as directed.

Work collaboratively with supervisors, fellow technicians, and airport staff to complete assigned tasks and respond to service requests.

Participate in scheduled preventive maintenance activities for ground equipment and infrastructure as assigned.

Assist with identifying and addressing basic ground-related issues using established procedures, and report or escalate more complex issues to a supervisor as directed.

Perform other related duties as assigned.
