Job Summary
Under general supervision, this position performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, operation, and safety of airport facilities, infrastructure, and equipment. The Airport Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining airfield systems, supporting operational activities, and ensuring compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), state, and local regulations.
Typical Duties
Airfield & Facility Maintenance
? Performs maintenance and repair of airport infrastructure, including runways, taxiways, aprons, terminal buildings, and related systems.
? Maintains airfield lighting systems, including runway and taxiway lights and navigational aids (NAVAIDs).
? Performs minor electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and structural repairs.
? Conducts preventative maintenance on equipment, vehicles, and airport systems.
Equipment Operation
? Operates light and heavy equipment, including forklifts, bucket trucks, runway sweepers, snowplows, and repair equipment.
? Uses tools and equipment safely and effectively to complete assigned work.
? Maintains and inspects equipment to ensure operational readiness.
Grounds & Infrastructure Maintenance
? Maintains airport grounds, including mowing, vegetation control, and application of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
? Supports upkeep of drainage systems, fencing, and perimeter security features.
? Assists with environmental compliance related to maintenance activities.
Operational Support & Airfield Safety
? Conducts airfield inspections and monitors conditions for safety and compliance.
? Communicates with pilots and FAA Flight Service regarding airport conditions.
? Monitors perimeter fencing, gates, and airside activity for compliance.
? Supports implementation of airport safety procedures and protocols.
Line Service & Aircraft Support
? Provides aircraft line service, including fueling, towing, and assisting pilots and crew.
? Supports aircraft ground operations in accordance with safety standards.
? Assists with ramp activities as needed.
Emergency Response
? Participates in emergency response activities, including aircraft incidents and weather-related events.
? Assists with operational response during emergencies and critical situations.
Records & Reporting
? Maintains records related to maintenance activities, inspections, and operational tasks.
? Reports safety concerns, maintenance issues, and operational needs to supervisors.
Operational Duties
? Performs janitorial and facility upkeep tasks in terminal and operational areas.
? Supports general airport operations during staffing needs or operational demands.
? Participates in on-call rotation and responds to after-hours needs.
Other Duties
? Performs other duties as assigned in support of airport operations.
Minimum Qualifications
? High school diploma or equivalent.
? One (1) year of experience in maintenance, equipment operation, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses & Certifications
? Valid New Mexico Class D driver's license.
? Line Service Fuel Technician Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
? Wildlife Hazard Management training (preferred or ability to obtain).
? FAA or AAE-related certifications preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
? Airport operations, maintenance practices, and safety procedures.
? FAA regulations, including 14 CFR Part 139.
? Equipment operation and maintenance principles.
? Basic electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
Skills in:
? Operating and maintaining equipment and tools.
? Performing maintenance and repair work.
? Communicating with staff, pilots, and the public.
? Using computers and standard software applications.
Ability to:
? Perform maintenance and operational duties with minimal supervision.
? Follow safety procedures and regulatory requirements.
? Work outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
? Respond effectively to emergencies and operational demands.
? Perform physically demanding work.
Physical Requirements
Work involves standing, walking, bending, lifting, and operating equipment. Requires lifting up to 100 pounds and performing physically demanding tasks.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily outdoors in airport operational environments with exposure to weather conditions, noise, chemicals, and heavy equipment. Position requires participation in an on-call schedule and may involve work outside normal business hours. Regular attendance is essential. Position is subject to drug testing and driver's license monitoring in accordance with applicable regulations and City policies.
