Summary

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Airport Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled maintenance and repair duties at the Southern California Logistics Airport and carries out related work as required. This classification is responsible for maintaining airport facilities and infrastructure through a broad range of maintenance activities. It differs from the Senior Airport Maintenance Worker classification, which provides work direction to small crews, performs special projects, and assumes additional leadership responsibilities while carrying out maintenance and repair work.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct airfield pavement maintenance, including asphalt and concrete removal and repair.
  • Apply airfield markings and perform painting, crack sealing, and joint sealing.
  • Operate grading and tractor equipment for compacting, mowing, erosion control, weed abatement, and herbicide application.
  • Perform airfield sweeping, traffic control, and delineation activities.
  • Maintain airport buildings through light bulb replacement, minor plumbing, painting, wall and stucco repairs, and carpentry work.
  • Repair and maintain fences, gates, and welded components.
  • Service and perform minor repairs on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
  • Operate vehicles, power tools, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
  • Respond to emergency situations and support airport operations.
  • Provide airport security and monitor airport facilities and grounds.
  • Escort vendors and contractors while ensuring compliance with airport safety and security requirements.
  • Perform custodial duties, including dusting, mopping, window cleaning, and general facility upkeep.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and one (1) year of airport or public works maintenance and repair experience, which may also include building and facilities maintenance, street maintenance, traffic control, or sanitary sewer maintenance.

License(s)/Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid California Class "C" driver's license upon hire and maintain it throughout employment with the City of Victorville.
  • Must maintain airport security clearance and driving privileges.

Knowledge of:

  • Airport rules, regulations, and security requirements.

Physical Demands & Working Environment

This position works primarily in an indoor office environment but also requires work outdoors in the field, with exposure to varying weather conditions, including wind, heat, cold, and rain. Incumbents may be required to climb ladders and work in trenches and confined spaces. Positions in this classification typically require balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and performing repetitive motions, with or without reasonable accommodation. This position involves very heavy work, requiring the exertion of more than 100 pounds of force occasionally (up to one-third of the workday), more than 50 pounds of force frequently (one-third to two-thirds of the workday), and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly (two-thirds or more of the workday) to move objects. Physical demands exceed those associated with heavy work. Incumbents may be exposed to machinery and moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, inadequate lighting, intense noise, travel, and environmental conditions such as temperature extremes, fumes, smoke, grease, odors, and dust. Incumbents must be able to see and hear within the normal range, with or without correction, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Incumbents may be required to respond to emergencies outside of regular working hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and must be willing to work an irregular schedule that may include varying shifts.

SALARY: Employees typically start at Step "1" of the salary range. Part-time employees do not receive benefits or merit increases and are hired at an hourly rate.

VACATION: Paid vacation is based on years of City of Victorville service: 80 hours for 0-5 years; 120 hours for 6-10 years; 160 hours for 11-15 years; 200 hours for 16+ years effective July 1, 2015.

SICK LEAVE: 96 hours of paid sick leave per year, including a sick leave pay back program upon resignation with five years of service.

HOLIDAYS: 13 Holidays per year plus one floating holiday for eligible full-time employees.

MEDICAL/DENTAL/VISION INSURANCE: Available for full-time employees and their eligible dependents, with a fringe subsidy.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION 457 PLAN: Available to interested employees.

LIFE INSURANCE: City-paid Life insurance coverage for full-time employees equivalent to one times annual salary, plus additional AD&D coverage. Supplemental life, accidental/death and dismemberment insurance available, paid for by the employee.

RETIREMENT: For employees hired on or after January 1, 2013, Public Employee's Retirement system contributions will be implemented according to Assembly Bill 340, Pension reform. Classic member's formula: 2.5% @55/ New member's formula: 2% @62. Effective July 1, 2015, employees pay CalPERS 8% employee contribution. The City does not participate in the Social Security program. Part-time employees are provided a supplemental retirement program under the deferred compensation program. The City is required to participate in the Medicare Program and contributes a matching 1.45% of salary.

SHORT-TERM DISABILITY: Employee-paid benefit provides 60% of salary after seven-day waiting period, up to a maximum $1,600 weekly benefit.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY: City-paid benefit provides 66-2/3% of salary after 90 days of disability for full-time employees, up to a maximum of $5,000 monthly.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Provided for all full-time employees and their eligible dependents.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS: Paid Parental Leave, Bilingual Pay, Tuition Reimbursement.
