Work Schedule: 9 hour shifts Monday through Thursday 7:30am to 5:00pm, with 4 hour Fridays 8:00am to 12:00pm.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position performs and coordinates maintenance and mechanical duties related to the operation and maintenance of airport owned buildings and grounds; evaluates and coordinates specialized repairs and maintenance on grounds and facilities with contractors as needed; performs directly related work as required.

The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Airport Superintendent and Operations Technician Lead, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, vendors, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in or around airport buildings, hangars, runways, and grounds in a variety of terrains, noise levels and weather conditions with exposure to airborne pathogens, and chemicals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs airfield inspections to ensure the airport maintains a safe operating environment and FAA Compliance.
  • Monitors Aircraft Operating Areas (AOA) runway, taxiways and lighting/markings/ signs for abnormal conditions including Foreign Object Debris (FOD).
  • Maintains and repairs city owned hangars including but not limited to; Doors, Locks, Security, lights, and addressing pest-related issues. Maintains an inventory of locks and parts needed for repairs.
  • Maintains and repairs Terminal Building and Administration Office and terminal building equipment, including, but not limited to; Office equipment; Sprinkler systems; Electrical and mechanical equipment, including furnace, air conditioning, water heaters, restaurant equipment, plumbing, electrical and security systems.
  • Monitors and maintains airfield lighting to ensure the specialized lighting systems are operational and visible.
  • Monitors and maintains Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS).
  • Issues Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) as needed.
  • Responds to emergency incidents that occur on the airfield.
  • Operates snowplow and schedules removal of snow as needed.
  • Operates tractor, with mower and various other attachments in the maintenance of airport grounds.
  • Manages wildlife and pest control on airport grounds.
  • Assists with the annual inspection of fire extinguishers in hangers and around airport.
  • Assists with vehicle gate access system card management
  • Coordinates repairs with vendors on any of the above systems, when scope is beyond internal capabilities.
  • Repairs or coordinates with designated vendor for repairs of the following areas:
  • Runway lights, taxiway lights, PAPI lights, and taxiway edge markers, including maintaining an inventory of bulbs.
  • Fuel island repairs and scheduled maintenance.
  • Windsocks and flags, and the beacon including minor electrical as needed.
  • Oversees contractors to contain materials and works with consultant on contracted work.
  • Assists in the enforcement of applicable federal, state, and local policies.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assures conformity to safety standards and methods when performing work to ensure safe operations for coworkers, general public, and self.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with key stakeholders and staff to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
  • Is punctual and timely in meeting requirements of performance, including attendance standards and work deadlines.
  • Communicates information and states concerns in a clear and professional manner.
  • Respects the opinion of others and demonstrates a reasonable relationship with employees, supervisors, and customers.
  • Accepts and performs in a timely and effective manner changes in work assignments and/or how work is performed.
  • Ability to conduct technical research on aviation and non-aviation equipment.
  • Regularly update and maintain applicable federal, state, and local publications.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required.
  • 1 plus years of experience in performing maintenance.
  • Or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Experience in airport operations preferred.
  • Experience in customer service and sourcing/procuring parts and equipment a plus.
  • Valid State of Idaho Class A CDL Driver's License within 12 months of employment.
  • First Aid & CPR & AED Certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Idaho Pesticide License with Core Competency and Ornamental Herbicides Endorsement within 12 months of employment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of hand and power tools and equipment used in maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of basic safety practices and equipment related to work.
  • Knowledge of basic facility and grounds maintenance techniques and materials.
  • Basic knowledge of commercial electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
  • Basic knowledge of proper maintenance of landscaped areas including the safe and proper use of related chemicals and pesticides.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, materials, and techniques of general aviation.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time with exposure to varying weather conditions and day or night schedules as required.
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The principal duties of this class are performed in or around airport buildings, hangars, runways, and grounds in a variety of terrains and weather conditions with exposure to airborne pathogens and chemicals. On-call scheduling with be on an alternating schedule.
