Description
The City of Sioux City is seeking an Airport Vehicle Equipment Mechanic to support operations at Sioux Gateway Airport. Under the general direction of the Airport Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs skilled mechanical work involving the maintenance and repair of specialized, complex heavy equipment and motorized diesel or gasoline vehicles.
The mechanic conducts major overhauls and repairs on heavy truck engines, transmissions, and motors; diagnoses issues using computerized systems; and responds to emergency service calls from the field. Daily responsibilities include maintaining and repairing hydraulic pumps, cylinders, and hoses, and fabricating attachments through welding and body fabrication. The role also uses computer systems to access vehicle history, maintain parts inventory, and issue parts.
This position requires maintaining shop areas, tools, and equipment; keeping accurate records of work performed and materials used; and maintaining positive public relations.

Job Knowledge: Complete working knowledge of the assembly, adjustment, tear down, and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive vehicles, trucks and specialized automotive equipment; knowledge and skill in the use of the common tools and equipment used in automotive mechanical maintenance and repair. Ability to troubleshoot, inspect and diagnose problems and malfunctions of vehicles and equipment, ability to interpret and follow drawings, schematics and repair charts, ability to develop and maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to employees. Requires the ability to speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process and procedures; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers (internal and external) and city officials.
Physical Requirements: The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers to handle and feel; reach with hands and arms; and smell. Ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing, ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with your body, arms, and/or legs.
Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
