Job Summary

The Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) plays an important role in the delivery of substance use disorder treatment services within an adolescent residential treatment program and is responsible for ensuring services are provided in accordance with applicable Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), Chapter 245G, and Minnesota Rule 2960 requirements. The LADC works with adolescents and their families to support recovery, personal growth, emotional wellness, and successful community functioning. Services are provided through individual counseling, group counseling, family involvement, assessment, treatment planning, psychoeducation, relapse prevention, skill development, and care coordination. The LADC assists adolescents in identifying and addressing substance use, co-occurring mental health concerns, behavioral challenges, family dynamics, trauma-related concerns, and other barriers to achieving treatment goals.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The essential functions include the following:

  • Evaluate and assist in implementing program services and treatment interventions designed to mee the developmental, behavioral health and substance use treatment needs or adolescents while supporting compliance with applicable licensing and regulatory requirements.
  • Independently complete a comprehensive assessment and an assessment summary of the adolescent client's problematic chemical use, mental health, family, social, educational and developmental needs within five calendar days after service initiation, utilizing ASAM
  • Develop and provide an individual treatment plan after completion of the comprehensive assessment which is subject to amendment until services to the client are terminated. The individual treatment plan must include treatment goals, specific methods to be used to address identified problems, resources to which the client is being referred, and client goals.
  • Provide case management/file documentation for assigned adolescent clients for individual caseload, noting all treatment related activities and services in an accurate, professional, and timely manner including assessment of chemical use and mental health problems.
  • Independently create, implement and monitor individualized treatment plans, provide group therapy and individual counseling services to adolescents with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Facilitate age-appropriate groups regarding the disease of addiction and the recovery process consistent with maintaining good mental health.
  • Facilitate psychoeducation in a lecture style for adolescents on topics related to addiction and
  • Responsible for complying with federal and state statutes, Minnesota Rule 2960, Chapter 245G requirements, client rights, confidentiality standards, mandated reporting requirements and professional ethical standards.
  • Engage parents, guardians, family members, and identified support systems, as appropriate, to support treatment goals, recovery planning and successful transition to the community.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings to review and update client progress notes, treatment effectiveness, family involvement and discharge planning needs.
  • Initiate and maintain ongoing communication with client referrals, probation, and social service agencies, etc.
  • Complete discharge summaries, continuing care recommendations and transition planning documentation for each client at the conclusion of treatment services.
Required Skills & Experience (Minimum Qualifications):
  • Current Minnesota Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC)
  • Meets all qualification requirements for counselors providing services in a Minnesota 245G licensed treatment program.
  • Completion of at least 30 hours of classroom instruction in adolescent
  • At least 150 hours of supervised experience providing adolescent alcohol and drug counseling services as a student or employee.
  • Knowledge of adolescent substance use disorder treatment, co-occurring disorders, trauma-informed care, and treatment planning.
  • Knowledge of Minnesota Rule 2960 requirements applicable to adolescent residential treatment
  • Knowledge of mandatory reporting requirements, confidentiality requirements, client rights, and professional ethics.
  • Comfort and compassion in working with individuals facing life-controlling challenges, such as mental health issues and addiction.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age or
  • At least 1 year of freedom from problematic
  • Must be able to meet specific staff requirements outlined in Minnesota Statutes 11 and Rule 2960.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and insurability in accordance with organizational policies if driving is required for assigned job duties.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain all required training and competency requirements applicable to the position prior to providing direct care or client services, including training related to client rights, confidentiality, mandated reporting, professional boundaries, and other applicable licensing and regulatory requirements.
  • Must successfully complete a Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background study and maintain eligibility for all DHS background studies, clearances, and requirements applicable to assigned services and programs prior to providing direct care or client

Target Compensation (Negotiable based on Qualifications)

LADC: $61,000-75,000

ADC-T: $57,000-$61,000
