Teaching Assistant/Classroom Aide

Saint Catherine Academy,

St. Catherine Academy, a private, state-approved special education school of the Diocese of Bridgeport, serves students with intellectual and developmental disabilities including autism.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the classroom teacher, the Teaching Assistant/Classroom Aide provides instructional support or other direct services to students under the supervision and direction of the classroom teacher. The Teaching Assistant/Classroom Aide must support the philosophy, values and activities of Saint Catherine Academy. To achieve this, the Teaching Assistant/Classroom Aide is expected to:

• Model appropriate behavior for the students in the classroom and the community.
• Provide individual or group assistance to students under the direction of the special education teacher to address the social, emotional and behavioral needs of students. Serve as a substitute teacher when the classroom teacher is absent under the direction of the Director of Education. Follow the daily plans provided by the classroom teacher during her absence.
• Be informed regarding the IEPs of the students in the classroom.
• Be knowledgeable of instructional content and methods used by the classroom teacher in the classroom.
• Provide assistance with classroom activities as assigned by the classroom teacher.
• Provide review and reinforcement in all subject areas including activities of daily living and vocational skills.
• Accompany and supervise students at special activities including, but not limited to, PE, Art, and Music.
• Provide supervision and instruction for students participating in job site experiences.
• Assist with toileting and personal care as needed. This may include standing for periods of time, bending and kneeling, and lifting moderate weight.
• Assist with supervision of lunch and recess, as well as any other time assigned by the Director of Education or classroom teacher.
• Teaching Assistants are expected to have or work towards acquiring the Driving Endorsement A.
