OVERVIEW

JOB TITLE: AMAA Gallery Attendant (2026-2027 academic year) - 3 to 4 positions will be offered, depending on student availability

LOCATION: St. Paul Campus

PAY RATE: $16.50 per hour

HOURS: 100-200 hours per position over the course of the academic year. Hours are based on student availability.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • The American Museum of Asmat Art (AMAA) is on the second floor of the Anderson Student Center and showcases art from southwestern New Guinea.
  • All positions are paid at the rate of $16.50/hour.
  • Hired attendants must regularly check their emails and promptly respond to messages from the director.
  • Positions require some availability during the following hours:
  • Tuesday 10-4pm
  • Wednesday 10-4pm
  • Thursday 10-4pm
  • Friday 10-2pm
  • Saturday 12-4pm

Applicants should provide their availability during the fall semester (e.g. "I can work from 10-4pm on T/Th and on Saturdays from 12-4pm" -or- "I''m available 10-12:30pm on W/F)" as well as the following:

JOB SUMMARY

Museum Attendants will:

  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts and work the entirety of their shifts.
  • Ensure the safety of the AMAA collection and other exhibition materials.
  • Follow correct procedures for opening and closing the museum.
  • Count and record the number of visitors during each shift.
  • Direct visitors to information guides, web resources, and contact information for museum staff.
  • Assist with other AMAA projects that can be carried out at the attendant desk.
  • Follow emergency procedures if needed.
  • Notify the director and, when possible, find another attendant to cover shifts if unable to work.
  • Report museum concerns to the director of the AMAA.

QUALIFICATIONS

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A friendly and welcoming demeanor.
  • Demonstrated punctuality and dependability.
  • An interest in art and other cultures.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Course experience in Art History and Visual Culture or Museum Studies.
  • Knowledge of Pacific and/or Asmat art.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate or doctoral levels.
