Job Summary

The Office of Academic Programs at the Allen Memorial Art Museum is seeking one part-time (15 hours/week) Oberlin student assistant to help with College and Conservatory classes using the museum's collection as well as the broader work of the Office of Academic Programs.

Responsibilities

  • Welcoming classes to the museum and introducing museum safety protocols and guidelines
  • Using proper art handling methods and registration techniques, moving works on paper to and from storage
  • Taking a primary role in the safe display of works on paper, paintings, and objects in the Print Study Room
  • Monitoring classes in the Print Study Room and galleries to ensure the safety of the art and comfort of visitors during class sessions
  • Providing support for classes, including conducting research and compiling notes, preparing materials for in-class activities, sourcing digital images, and recording short audio guides
  • Conducting research on the AMAM's collection as well as topics in higher education, museums, and object-based pedagogies
  • Contributing to discussions about how to deepen student and faculty engagement with the AMAM and its collections
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Detail-oriented approach to tasks
  • Collaborative, creative attitude toward problem-solving
  • Ability to work independently and with an awareness to know when to seek guidance and assistance
  • Confidence to speak in front of classes and large audiences and to enforce museum policies
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment for all Oberlin students
  • Experience conducting independent research on art, artifacts, and/or visual/material culture
  • Ability to lift archival boxes (up to 25 pounds) and handle art with care

Preference will be given to applicants interested in a museum career.
