Are you passionate about creating resilient cloud systems that power mission-critical operations? Do you thrive on independently solving novel problems, building automation, and engineering reliability at scale for some of the world"s most complex environments?

Amazon Web Services is seeking experienced AWS Dedicated Cloud Engineers to join our Region Reliability Engineering & Automation (RRE&A) team. Our mission is to ensure the seamless operation of AWS"s dedicated cloud regions through proactive reliability engineering, automation, and advanced solutions.

We"re looking for engineers who go beyond following runbooks - you diagnose unfamiliar issues without playbooks, build automation that eliminates operational toil, and serve as a subject-matter expert in at least one technical domain. You understand the Agile mindset and DevOps philosophies, and you"re ready to redesign systems, processes, and tools to deliver operational excellence on a massive scale.

If you"re ready to dive deep, own complex problems end-to-end, mentor other engineers, and make a visible impact in cloud computing, we"re excited to meet you.

This position requires that the candidate selected must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph. The position further requires the candidate to opt into a commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.

Key job responsibilities

  • Own Complex Problem Resolution: Independently diagnose and resolve novel issues across multiple service domains without relying on existing SOPs or escalation. Identify root causes and drive permanent fixes.
  • Build and Ship Automation: Design, implement, and maintain automation (Terraform, IaC, scripting) that measurably reduces operational burden and improves regional reliability at scale.
  • Serve as Domain Expert: Develop and maintain deep subject-matter expertise in at least one technical area (networking, storage, compute, security, Kubernetes, etc.) and serve as a go-to resource for the team.
  • Enhance Regional Reliability: Expand regional coverage for AWS"s critical services, proactively identifying systemic risks and driving solutions before they impact mission-critical operations.
  • Mentor and Elevate the Team: Guide engineers through complex troubleshooting, share knowledge across the team, and contribute to a culture of operational excellence.
  • Support National Security: Partner with U.S. Intelligence and Defense agencies to ensure mission resilience, implementing secure, reliable, and scalable cloud solutions.

A day in the life

On a typical day, you"ll lead troubleshooting efforts on complex multi-service issues, drive automation projects from design through deployment, and mentor junior engineers on your team. You"ll collaborate with service teams across AWS to resolve region-specific challenges, contribute to architecture decisions, and continuously improve operational processes. You"ll participate in on-call rotations and often serve as the escalation point for difficult issues that don"t have existing playbooks.

About the team

AWS Region Reliability Engineering & Automation offers the entrepreneurial feel of a start-up within one of the world"s most advanced cloud organizations. You"ll work with a team that believes in tackling hard problems, growing expertise, and driving a more reliable and resilient future for AWS"s largest government customers.

So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
