The Position

The Ambulance Operator - Emergency Medical Technician positions, hours, benefits, and other terms and conditions of employment are pending City Council approval.

The Ontario Fire Department is seeking highly motivated individuals looking to grow their career and become part of a dedicated team in providing emergency services to their community. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to excellent customer service and will be passionate about providing the highest level of service. The incumbent must have the ability to work various schedules including days, nights, weekends, holidays, 24-hour shifts, and scheduled or emergency overtime. The successful candidate will embody the Ontario Fire Departments mission and vision as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the principles of the Citys Customer Service Philosophy - Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving.

NOTE: The Ambulance Operator - EMT position is a limited-term assignment, limited to three (3) years.

The following procedures will apply:

• The City of Ontario reserves the right, if necessary, to accept only the first one hundred (100) applications from applicants that meet the qualification guidelines below.
• Completed applications will be reviewed and only qualified applicants whose qualifications best meet or exceed the requirements of the position and needs of the City will be invited to participate further in the selection process.
• This recruitment will result in an eligibility list, which will be used to fill any current and future full-time and part-time vacancies within this classification. Part-time/Temporary positions are scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week and are not eligible to participate in the Citys health insurance or retirement plans.

Background Investigation

All appointments to this position are subject to a satisfactory background investigation conducted by the Ontario Fire Department. The background investigation will include the following: passing of a polygraph test and the successful completion of a post-offer medical exam (including drug screen). Candidates may be disqualified from further consideration during the background investigation for a variety of reasons including if they have: an excessive number of traffic citations and/or collisions; arrests and/or convictions; a history of illegal substance abuse; poor credit history (factors include bankruptcy, foreclosures, liens, repossessions, and recency); or thefts from a previous employer. The following list describes some areas that are covered in the background investigation:

• Your relatives, references, and acquaintances are asked to comment on your suitability for a career in public safety.
• The information supplied regarding your educational history is examined and verified.
• You must list a history of your residences.
• Your work history and experience are examined with regard to your dependability, relationships with fellow workers, trustworthiness, and general job performance.
• Military service records are subject to verification.
• The background investigation considers your management of personal finances (however, being in debt does not automatically disqualify you).
• Your criminal, driving, and insurance records are evaluated. Felony convictions will be grounds for disqualification from the selection process.

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Ambulance Operator - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) include the following:

• Operates City-owned ambulances and other department vehicles during emergency and non-emergency calls for service; transports patients to designated medical facilities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and department policies.
• Provides basic emergency medical care and treatment within the scope of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), including assessing and documenting vital signs, patient conditions, and circumstances surrounding the emergency.
• Assists paramedic personnel with patient care and treatment, including lifting, carrying, transferring, and transporting ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients, as directed.
• Monitors and operates radio and other communication equipment to exchange information with dispatch, emergency services personnel, hospital personnel, and other applicable parties.
• Cleans and decontaminates ambulances and medical equipment in compliance with applicable regulations, protocols, and infection-control guidelines.
• Prepares and maintains accurate patient care, incident, billing, and related records and reports.
• Performs daily inspection of assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure readiness; cleans and restocks ambulances; and assists with the scheduling and transport of department vehicles for general maintenance.
• Maintains inventories of emergency medical supplies, equipment, vehicle parts, and other fire department materials; and requests replenishment as necessary.
• Maintains patient confidentiality and performs assigned duties in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and protocols.
• Provides operational and logistical support to sworn and non-sworn personnel; assists with fire station duties, including cleaning and maintaining assigned work and storage areas.
• Participates in department training exercises, department drills, and continuing education.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines

Education

High school diploma or recognized equivalent.

Certification

• Valid California Ambulance Driver Certificate issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of application and maintained throughout employment.
• Valid Medical Examiner's Certificate completed by an authorized medical examiner at the time of application and maintained throughout employment.
• Valid California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification at the time of application and maintained throughout employment.
• Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross at the time of application and maintained throughout employment.

License

Valid Class C California driver's license at time of application and an acceptable driving record at time of application and throughout employment.
