Service Hours: Half-Time (Requires completion of 900 service hours over the term; approximately 20-25 hours per week)

The Stevens Point Area Public School District (SPAPSD) is thrilled to partner with AmeriCorps to offer a meaningful service opportunity for an individual passionate about student well-being and mental health. We are currently seeking a dedicated and empathetic AmeriCorps Student Services Assistant to serve our elementary students (Grades K-6) during the 2026-2027 school year.
In this role, you will work closely with our school counseling team to foster a positive, safe, and inclusive school environment. By providing targeted social, emotional, and behavioral support, you will help equip young learners with the skills they need to navigate challenges and thrive both in and out of the classroom. This position is an incredible stepping stone for individuals interested in school counseling, social work, psychology, or education.
Key Responsibilities
Counseling Support: Work collaboratively under the guidance of the school counselor to implement comprehensive school counseling program initiatives.
Social-Emotional Interventions: Facilitate and support class-wide, small-group, and individual interventions focusing on social, emotional, and behavioral skill-building.
De-escalation & Crisis Support: Utilize trauma-informed de-escalation techniques to support K-6 students experiencing behavioral or emotional dysregulation, helping them return to a baseline state ready for learning.
Classroom Engagement: Assist educators in delivering Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum and promoting positive behavioral expectations.
Mentorship: Serve as a positive, consistent role model and mentor for students needing additional emotional support or check-ins throughout the school day.
Data & Documentation: Maintain accurate, confidential notes regarding student progress and behavioral tracking as directed by the school counselor.
