AmeriCorps Volunteer tutor position-ASPIRE-MD

1200 Hours - From August 17 2026 to June 18 2027

Time - Mon. thru Thurs.-8am to 3pm, Fri.-10am to 3pm

The Sewa International's ASPIRE Maryland program partners with school systems to provide support services to ensure students are gaining a deeper understanding of Language arts, Math, Science, and Social studies concepts and performing well in State level tests.

We are seeking individuals to serve as AmeriCorps members who will support classroom teachers with small group or one-on-one instruction in the classroom or pull out format. Members will help students understand the concepts taught to complete class assignments and for exam preparation with an aim to score better in their district and statewide assessments. Members will also be required to do socio-emotional and mindfulness activities with students.

AmeriCorps volunteers serve a minimum of 1200 hours with an minimum of 33 hours per week for 10 months from August 2026 to June 2027. During the school day, volunteers provide subject-based academic tutoring to students who are identified below grade level by the teacher based on their most recent test scores.

A.Performance Criteria

1. Performance as an AmeriCorps Member

• Serve productively and effectively across service environments and adhere to program Policies and Procedures
• Meet monthly service hour benchmarks
• Demonstrate the ability to balance service activities

2.Teamwork with Colleagues at school and other events

• Demonstrate professional behavior (aware of voice level,confidentiality, and constructive conversations)
• Use appropriate language (refrains from making negative comments and gossiping)
• Demonstrate the ability to be flexible and serve cooperatively
• Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively to resolve conflicts

3.Performance as an ASPIRE Tutor

• Implement service as per planning with classroom teacher
• Use appropriate language with students
• Follow Supervisor recommendations for student improvement
• Maintain electronic records accurately (America Learns, ADP, Sewa student log app)
• Maintain paper records accurately (lesson plans, progress monitoring logs, and data logs)

4.Professional Conduct

• Maintain a professional appearance and wear the AmeriCorps logo daily (program name tag and uniform), follow site dress code policies
• Sign in by 7:45am and adhere to daily schedule
• Complete and submit weekly time sheets by Monday at 8:00am
• Follow standard protocol for tardies, absences, and early campus departure. Consistent daily attendance
• Adhere to all codes of conduct or related Policies and Procedures of Sewa International, the school and community partners.

5.Additional Responsibilities

• Support school district summer schools and/or community partners during the month of June

Serve through the end of the contract period, regardless of the number of service hours accrued.

Support school events, as long as these activities are within the AmeriCorps guidelines and do not take away time from the essential functions of the Member service position. Members may be required to perform other position-related instructions within the scope of their normal service activities, as requested by their Supervisor, in alignment with the terms and conditions of the AmeriCorps grant, and subject to reasonable accommodation.

Conduct self in a professional, ethical manner, and respond appropriately in a courteous and respectful manner to all fellow Members and Community Partner Staff.

Read and write proficiently in English. Communicate effectively with all fellow Members in both verbal and written correspondence. Possess basic computer skills and accurate record keeping abilities. Be able to serve up to 33 hours per week, exhibiting a strong work ethic with consistent attendance and dependability.

High school diploma or equivalent and experience with tutoring or assisting in a classroom is required.

Must be a U.S. Citizen or be a permanent resident. Enrollment in the program is contingent on the results of a National Service Criminal History Check. Members must submit to a criminal background check that includes FBI fingerprinting, National Sex Offender Registry, and state criminal background check.

School environments are very structured, and Members must be able to adapt to school schedules and changing service conditions. Daily schedules may change unexpectedly due to assemblies, substitute teachers, etc. Members must be flexible in the face of these changes. Based on the student's needs, service may be performed in the classroom or in a pull-out format.

Physical demands are similar to what a teacher experiences. Emotional demands require that Members work well with all fellow Members and Community Partner Staff as well as understand student behaviors and appropriately manage them. Members must be able to maintain professionalism in a working environment that includes varying perspectives and diverse personalities. Must have a strong commitment to volunteerism and community service. Intellectual demands require that Members can work with middle school students and help them understand the concepts taught and connect with students professionally.
