Description This position is responsible for providing professional development, coaching, and school-based support for AMSTI teachers. Additional responsibilities include providing assistance with summer training and other ALSDE activities, as needed. Daily travel within the UNA Regional Inservice area, as well as some overnight travel, is required. Salary will be based on education, years of experience, and the current AMSTI salary schedule for 11-month content specialists. This is a grant-funded position. Initial and continued employment in this position is contingent upon funding by the sponsoring agency. Sponsorship is not available for this position. Essential Job Duties Professional Learning Facilitate and/or participate in professional learning for teachers and/or administrators based on assignments and/or LEA needs, including online options; Assist AMSTI-ALSDE in developing and maintaining standardized, pre-approved professional learning opportunities and supporting resources for AMSTI and/or for the ALSDE, including online options; Provide ongoing professional learning to AMSTI lead teachers, certified AMSTI facilitators, and/or instructional coaches; Assist IHEs with planning and conducting pre-service and continuing education/outreach activities; Participate in AMSTI professional learning activities and staff meetings conducted by the ALSDE and site director, unless prior approval for absence is granted; Educator Support Provide frequent, ongoing science support and coaching to teachers, AMSTI lead teachers, certified AMSTI facilitators, instructional coaches, and/or administrators based on assignments and/or LEA needs (in situations where the specialist is leading the classroom or team-teaching, the classroom teacher must always be present); Assist AMSTI teachers in effectively using common planning time and professional learning communities to improve science instruction; Assist in recruiting new AMSTI science teachers and/or facilitators; Research the effects of current math, science, and/or technology practices in AMSTI classrooms, as requested by the ALSDE; Coordinate work through the site director, collaborate with other specialists, and communicate with all stakeholders; Achieve and maintain proficiency in all standards, pedagogical content knowledge, and AMSTI lessons and practices through AMSTI-ALSDE and approved outside professional learning opportunities, based on the requirements; Instructional Resources: Work with general and materials managers to make site-level decisions based on teacher needs/requests; Provide feedback to the ALSDE regarding customization of science kits and materials to make them teacher/classroom friendly; General Duties Maintain records (including financial) and complete paperwork in a timely manner, utilizing Monday.com; Participate in the development, maintenance, and promotion of AMSTI resources according to the resource development and PR guidelines; Communicate with site director/PI and AMSTI-ALSDE in advance as it pertains to retirement or resignation plans (under normal circumstances, a minimum of six-month advance notice is requested); Perform all other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree is preferred; Five years of teaching experience in grades K-5 science in an Alabama public school is required; AMSTI training is required; AMSTI trainer certification, preferred; Experience presenting professional development to adults is preferred. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS: Valid Alabama Teaching certificate in Elementary or Early Childhood Education is required; Clear status with FBI and ABI fingerprinting processes is required; Valid drivers license is required. The basic life coverage level is 1.5 times the covered employees annual base salary with a maximum benefit of $400,000. As a member of the Teachers Retirement System of Alabama (TRS), eligible employees have life benefits available through the TRS. Also, for eligible active employees, a death benefit of the payment of accrued sick leave is paid to the employees beneficiary by the University. Long-Term Disability InsuranceThis coverage provides benefits after a 90-day period of disability. The monthly benefit is 60% of the covered employee's monthly base salary not to exceed $10,000 per month. The cost for this benefit is paid in full by the University for eligible employees and the provider for this coverage is Symetra. Retirement Plans The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama (TRS) is a defined benefit plan in which participation is mandatory for eligible employees. Eligible employees are categorized by the TRS as Tier I or Tier II members. Rates below are effective as of October 1, 2025 Tier I - Employee contribution rate is 7.5% for regular employees and 8.5% for law enforcement employees.
