Prescreen Questions

  1. When you receive an FEA model from another engineer to review, what do you check before you ever look at the stress plots and what are the most common mistakes you find?
  2. You're designing a fixture to vibe test a 40 lb flight component. Walk me through how you ensure the fixture doesn't interfere with the test, and how you'd verify it before hardware exists.
  3. Describe a time your hand calculation and FEA gave significantly different results. How did you figure out who was right, and what did you do with the answer?

Contract Length: 6 Months
Location: Kent, WA
Work Setup: On-site

Join an innovative aerospace engineering team supporting the design, analysis, and validation of advanced tooling and Ground Support Equipment (GSE). As a Structural Analyst you will apply classical structural analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective tooling solutions that support manufacturing and assembly operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural strength assessments using classical engineering methods and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for tooling and Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
  • Develop, document, and review stress analyses to support engineering drawing releases and technical documentation.
  • Lead conceptual and detailed structural analyses for tooling used in the manufacture and assembly of structural components, mechanical/actuated systems, and hydraulic and fluid systems.
  • Mentor tooling designers on best practices in stress, stability, and fracture analysis.
  • Provide technical guidance on design concepts while balancing performance, cost, manufacturability, and risk.
  • Support cross-functional engineering teams with design development, trade studies, and technical reviews.
  • Serve as the technical point of contact for vendor-developed tooling projects, ensuring compliance with engineering requirements and project objectives.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering with 8+ years of experience analyzing aerospace, automotive, or similar tooling and Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
  • Demonstrated experience creating and validating finite element models using ANSYS, NX Simulation, or Nastran.
  • Strong proficiency with 1D, 2D, and 3D FEA models involving weldments, machined parts, and fabricated structures.
  • Expertise in developing free-body diagrams, calculating internal loads and reaction forces, and simplifying complex structural problems.
  • Extensive experience performing hand calculations for steel and aluminum tooling, machining fixtures, and welded structures.
  • Strong understanding of bolted joint analysis, including preload, joint stiffness, shear/tension interaction, and insert pull-out calculations.
  • Proficiency in welded joint analysis, including weld sizing, effective throat calculations, combined loading, and failure mode evaluation.
  • Familiarity with structural design standards such as AISC 360, ASME B30, ASME B31, and ASME BTH-1.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present technical findings to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with Creo and/or Siemens NX.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex engineering projects on schedule.
  • Strong customer focus and the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational and project management skills.
