GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under close supervision, according to established procedures, assists the pathologists, residents, and pathology assistants in the handling of surgical specimens and in performing autopsies.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment and improvement programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Follows established procedures to prepare surgical specimens for grossing.
Stores and discards surgical and/or autopsy specimens under established protocols.
Transfers body to and from morgue; ensures proper and legal authorization for human post-mortem examination and proper restoration of body for acceptable release to the funeral director.
Assists in the postmortem examination including evisceration and obtains biological specimens for analysis.
