Team Red Dog is hiring an Android Test Automation Engineer for our client, a Fortune 50 technology leader and AI-driven technology organization. This opportunity offers the chance to help shape the quality and reliability of the next generation of agent-first devices by developing automated test solutions for prototype Android hardware. You'll build automation frameworks, validate software across builds and release environments, and collaborate with software engineers to ensure defects are identified before release. If you're passionate about Android, test automation, software engineering, CI/CD, and working with cutting-edge hardware, this role provides a rare opportunity to contribute to an innovative chip-to-cloud platform from its earliest stages.

Top Required Skills (Must Haves):

  1. Software Engineering (5+ years) – Strong coding experience building and maintaining production-quality software using Android/Kotlin, C++, or other strongly typed programming languages. Candidates should be comfortable developing automation infrastructure, debugging code, and passing a technical coding assessment.
  2. Android Test Automation (1+ years) – Hands-on experience provisioning, configuring, and validating software on Android or AOSP-based physical devices. Experience creating automated test suites that execute directly on hardware is highly preferred.
  3. Automation Frameworks & CI/CD – Experience designing and maintaining automated testing frameworks, integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines, and ensuring continuous validation across software builds and release cycles.
  4. Independent Technical Ownership – Ability to independently drive automation initiatives, analyze complex failures, troubleshoot software issues, collaborate with engineering teams, and deliver high-quality solutions with minimal oversight.

Opportunity Overview:

Project Solara represents Microsoft's vision for the next generation of intelligent, agent-first devices. As part of the Applied Sciences Group, you'll help deliver software quality across prototype hardware powered by the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP), an enterprise operating system built on Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Working alongside experienced software engineers and technical leaders, you'll contribute directly to automation strategy while gaining hands-on experience with emerging hardware platforms that are already being used internally across Microsoft.

How you will make an impact:

  • Design, develop, and maintain automated test suites supporting functional, regression, smoke, performance, and release validation testing.
  • Build automation that provisions, configures, and executes software across prototype Android devices and test environments.
  • Execute automated testing across development builds while analyzing failures, reproducing issues, and providing detailed diagnostics to engineering teams.
  • Contribute to scalable automation frameworks and integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Partner closely with software engineers, program managers, and technical leads to improve software quality and release readiness.
  • Track software defects, verify fixes, document quality risks, and communicate release-blocking issues.
  • Maintain comprehensive test documentation, automation scripts, execution reports, coverage metrics, and hardware configuration records.
  • Support prototype device setup, flashing, provisioning, and ongoing maintenance of device fleets and automation environments.
  • Recommend improvements to automation coverage, framework design, testing processes, and overall software quality.

The expertise you bring:

  • Associate's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5–7+ years of experience in software engineering, software testing, test automation, or quality engineering.
  • Strong programming experience using Android/Kotlin, C++, or other strongly typed programming languages.
  • Experience designing, developing, and maintaining automated testing frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with Android or AOSP device provisioning, configuration, and automated testing strongly preferred.
  • Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of software release validation, regression testing, and defect lifecycle management.
  • Experience documenting test plans, execution results, coverage metrics, and quality reports.
  • Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

What makes a candidate highly successful in this role:

Successful candidates bring a strong software engineering foundation combined with hands-on experience building automation for Android devices rather than simply executing manual test cases. They are comfortable writing production-quality code, designing maintainable automation frameworks, and independently driving technical work from implementation through troubleshooting. Experience working directly with Android or AOSP-based hardware, provisioning physical devices, integrating automation into CI/CD pipelines, and collaborating closely with engineering teams will allow candidates to make an immediate impact. Those who thrive in fast-paced product development environments and enjoy solving complex technical challenges will be especially successful.
