Summary:

This position supports the safe, efficient, and cost‑effective care delivered by anesthesia services by assisting with the preparation, organization, and maintenance of anesthesia equipment, supplies, and procedural environments. The Surgical Technologist serving in this anesthesia support role performs non‑clinical, technical, and logistical duties that ensure anesthesia providers are equipped to deliver high‑quality patient care. All tasks are completed under the direct supervision of licensed personnel and are consistent with the Surgical Technologist scope of practice in Washington State.

 

Position Reports To: Surgical Services Manager

Essential Functions:
  1. Support Anesthesia providers in the surgical and procedural areas by preparing rooms, equipment, and supplies to ensure safe, timely anesthesia care.

  2. Prepare and stage airway equipment—including RSI supplies and fiberoptic/Glidescope accessories—and organize age‑appropriate airway‑management supplies under the direction of licensed staff. Not permitted: applying cricoid pressure or participating in direct airway management.

  3. Assist with invasive procedures, including sterile setup for arterial lines, CVP, and PA catheters, by preparing rooms, procedure tables, and sterile supplies using sterile technique. Not permitted: Inserting, manipulating, removing, or dressing invasive lines/catheters.

  4. Respond promptly to anesthesia‑related emergencies by bringing required equipment, assisting with room setup, and supporting licensed staff with non‑clinical tasks to facilitate rapid intervention. Not permitted: Performing airway maneuvers, administering medications, providing clinical treatment, or making independent clinical decisions.

  5. Clean, decontaminate, and prepare sterile and non‑sterile anesthesia and monitoring equipment using standard precautions and infection‑control practices; inspect equipment for cleanliness, basic function, and defects, and promptly report any malfunctioning items.

  6. Communicates openly with licensed staff when a task falls outside ST scope and collaborates to ensure the right level of support is present.

  7. Communicate proactively with the charge nurse to report needs, coordinate coverage, and ensure adequate support for all ORs and safe patient care. Not allowed: Independently reallocating staff or making staffing decisions.

  8. Assist with obtaining, labeling, and transporting laboratory specimens and retrieving lab results as requested.

  9. Assist with patient transport by preparing oxygen sources, ensuring transport monitors are available, and supporting safe movement under direction of licensed staff. Not permitted: independent patient monitoring or independent decision-making during transport.

  10. Retrieve blood products from the Blood Bank and assist licensed staff with documentation and supply readiness for transfusion. Not permitted: Verifying, initiating, administering, hanging, starting, or monitoring blood transfusions.

  11. Assists with medication logistics by staging infusion pumps and administration sets, and by replacing anesthesia gases according to established procedures. Not permitted: Compounding medications, programming pumps, administering medications, or handling controlled substances.

  12. Stock and maintain par levels of anesthesia supplies, medications (per policy), and specialty carts (Difficult airway, Belmont/Level One, Glidescopes, MRI, Pediatric).

  13. Support department workflow during non-procedural or low-volume periods by stocking, cleaning, organizing equipment, and preparing rooms as directed by charge RN. Not allowed: performing RN, anesthesia provider, or Certified Surgical Technologist duties.

  14. Maintains active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.

     

  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Surgical Technologist registration in Washington State (within 90 days of hire).
  • Basic Life Support (CPR) certification (within 90 days of hire).
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work in faced-paced, dynamic clinical environment.
  • Ability to organize and maintain supplies and equipment.

Desired:

  • Experience with anesthesia equipment or procedural care.
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique.
  • Understanding of Surgical Technologist scope of practice in Washington State.

  •  This role works in fast‑paced perioperative and procedural environments, supporting anesthesia providers with non‑clinical, equipment‑focused, and logistical tasks. The position involves frequent movement, room turnover activities, supply handling, and preparing equipment in operating and procedure rooms. Work includes exposure to biohazardous materials, standard infection‑control environments, medical gases in storage areas, and periods of standing, bending, and lifting. Duties are performed under direct supervision of licensed staff, with strict adherence to safety protocols, standard precautions, and Washington State Surgical Technologist scope‑of‑practice regulations.
