Position Summary

The Anesthesiologist is responsible for providing anesthesia care to patients undergoing surgical, obstetric, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures. This role ensures the safety, comfort, and optimal clinical outcomes of patients before, during, and after anesthesia administration. The Anesthesiologist collaborates closely with surgeons, proceduralists, CRNAs, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate patients to determine appropriate anesthesia plans and assess risk factors.

  • Administer general, regional, or local anesthesia in compliance with established protocols and safety standards.

  • Monitor patient vital signs and responses during procedures; adjust anesthetic levels as needed.

  • Manage post-anesthesia recovery and pain control, including prescribing and adjusting pain management strategies.

  • Provide emergency airway management and resuscitation when necessary.

  • Supervise and collaborate with Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and anesthesia technicians.

  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record.

  • Participate in quality assurance, patient safety, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Stay current with advances in anesthesiology practices, equipment, and medications.

  • Comply with hospital policies, medical staff bylaws, and state/federal regulations.

Qualifications

  • Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).

  • Training: Completion of an accredited residency in Anesthesiology.

  • Licensure: Current Virginia medical license and Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Anesthesiology.

  • Certifications: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) required; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.

  • Experience: Prior experience in hospital or surgical setting preferred.
