Performs general/specialized work functions associated with maintaining shelter facilities, grounds, and equipment, receiving, processing, and caring for animals housed in the shelter, adopting out and/or assisting with euthanizing animals, and ensuring shelter operations are maintained in an effective and efficient manner in accordance with state and local ordinances.
Essential Functions
- Cares for, cleans, grooms, and feeds all domestic and exotic animals received into the shelter; moves animals to proper shelter and ensures no threat to one another; observes and evaluates disposition of animals and interaction with humans for both adaptability and adoptability.
- Cleans and maintains shelter facilities, grounds, and equipment; mows/trims lawn, picks up trash, and waters plants, operates shelter cleaning equipment; maintains livestock and livestock area/pens.
- Ensures animals have sufficient food and water; prepares appropriate food mixtures for animals according to type, size, and age; sanitizes and disinfects animal quarters and food/water dishes.
- Observes and examines animals for signs of illness or injury; prepares and administers medications, vaccinations and deworming treatments; cleans and treats wounds; requests veterinarian services as necessary; performs routine lab work to include blood and fecal testing and skin scraping.
- Educates the public on responsible pet ownership, animal care techniques and procedures, laws and ordinances, and completes pet adoptions and provides adoption counseling; handles public inquiries concerning animal services and pet adoptions.
- Provides information and education for customers on pet breeds, characteristics, and County adoption policies and procedures to increase adoptions and match potential adopters with appropriate animals.
- Assists with the intake of animals from the public and field officers; includes applicable paperwork, data entry, research of microchips, and processing; checks zone locations and dispatches calls associated with complaints to appropriate field units.
- Maintains a comprehensive current knowledge of animal first aid, care and maintenance, zoonotic diseases, animal breed recognition, and breed characteristic behavior.
- Escorts the public and assists with looking for and reclaiming lost pets from the shelter; accompanies owners visiting quarantined pets; monitors quarantined animals as required.
- Assists with euthanasia of animals as required and in accordance with County policy.
- Scans animals for radio frequency Identification (RFID) chips; processes and maintains identification files and other required paperwork on all animals housed in the center.
- Inventories, orders, and maintains sufficient number of supplies, including food and cleaning supplies, to ensure adequate availability to perform daily tasks.
- Assists with assigning and overseeing volunteers, community service workers, and students performing tasks relating to operation of and quality care of animals housed in the shelter.
- Assists customers with cremation services and the cremation process, including interaction with bereaved pet owners; ensures associated paperwork and paper and computer records are accurate.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs daily rounds with the lead staff and supervisors to aid with vaccination, microchipping, and examination of animals that are sick and/or injured.
- Performs various housekeeping tasks such as washing and drying shelter laundry, cleaning windows, trash removal, and miscellaneous janitorial duties.
- Drives a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties; picks up and delivers supplies from various locations around the County; may deliver specimens to the state lab for testing.
- Answers telephone calls from the public, obtains information regarding complaints, maintains logs and files, and fills out complaint forms; performs data entry functions by keying information into a computer system.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Fingerprinting required.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License with any applicable endorsement(s) to drive a County vehicle as provided in CMA 5805.

- Salary offers above the minimum pay grade may be considered based on qualifications.
- Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The County's Administrative Office will determine who will be required to work on an incident-by-incident basis.
