Animal Care Supervisor

Due to an internal promotion, Sacramento Zoo is seeking an experienced and collaborative animal care professional to join our Animal Care Department leadership team as an Animal Care Supervisor.

This is a unique opportunity for a hands-on leader who is passionate about animal welfare, staff development, and advancing modern zoological management practices. We are particularly interested in connecting with candidates who bring expertise in avian management, herpetology, ambassador animal programs, or a combination of these areas.

The successful candidate will serve as a working supervisor, providing leadership and support for animal care staff while actively participating in husbandry, training, enrichment, welfare assessment, veterinary procedures, and collection management. This position plays an important role in shaping team culture, supporting professional development, and ensuring the highest standards of animal care.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We welcome applications from candidates with demonstrated leadership experience and strong backgrounds in one or more of the following:

• Avian husbandry and management
• Reptile and amphibian care and breeding programs
• Ambassador animal training and program management
• Positive reinforcement training and behavioral management
• Animal welfare assessment and enrichment programs
• Staff supervision, mentoring, and team development

Candidates with expertise in birds and herpetology are especially encouraged to apply. We are also highly interested in professionals whose experience combines avian and ambassador animal management or herpetology and ambassador animal management.

Sacramento Zoo is entering an exciting period of growth and transformation. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated animal care team, contribute to the development of future programs, and make a meaningful impact on animal welfare, conservation, and guest engagement.

Experience Required

• Minimum four (4) years of paid experience in exotic animal care, with at least two (2) years focused on avian or ambassador or herpetological species. • Minimum one (1) year in a senior keeper, team lead, or supervisory capacity. • Bachelor's degree in biology, zoology, animal science, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered. • Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record. • Experience working in an AZA-accredited facility strongly preferred.

Salary

$35-$38/hour + generous benefits package.
