Job Summary Performs animal feeding and care, assists customers interested in adopting animals, and performs facility cleaning and other duties related to the care of animals housed at the City of Bryan Animal Center. This is a part-time year-round position.

Essential Job Functions Receives, handles, and kennels animals of all species, including those of unknown temperament and aggressive, sick, or injured animals. Prepares and dispenses food and water to animals. Performs bathing and basic grooming of animals. Provides animals with exercise and basic training. Assists the public looking for lost or adoptable pets. Facilitates the animal adoption process by answering customer questions, searching for and introducing them to various animals, and assisting with adoption procedures. Performs routine inspections of animals, including monitoring and documenting their behavior, symptoms of disease, and overall condition. Conducts general health checks, administers medicine, and vaccinates animals, providing special care when advised of animals requiring medication, treatment, and/or special needs. Maintains records and files of the animal center and the animals housed there, logging all incidents concerning animal control. Cleans and disinfects kennels and cages, including cleaning food bowls and litter pans, sweeping, and using a high-pressure water hose to clean floors and walls. Assists in humanely euthanizing animals due to disease, injury, or overcrowded conditions. Cleans and maintains the facility and performs minor facility repairs. Restocks supplies in all animal areas, maintaining adequate supplies, including food, cleaning, and disinfectant supplies. Maintains a safe and effective work environment and complies with all procedures, policies, rules, and regulations. Assists other staff with their assignments, helps train new staff, and performs other related duties as assigned. Responds regularly and promptly to work.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must possess at least one year of work experience, preferably involving the care of animals
  • Must possess an affection for animals, concern for their welfare, and be familiar and comfortable working with various breeds of dogs, cats, and other animals

Preferred:

  • Additional higher education training or certification directly related to animal care

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the general care, nutrition, and handling of a variety of animal breeds and species
  • Principles and practices of record keeping
  • Ability to learn job-related procedures and techniques primarily through verbal instruction, observation, and on-the-job training
  • Perform standardized routines and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Humanely and safely handle frightened, injured, ill, and/or aggressive animals
  • Tolerate the euthanasia of animals
  • Recognize sick or injured animals and notify the proper authorities
  • Recognize the need for and use animal restraint equipment when necessary
  • Maintain relevant written records and operate a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software to enter data as required
  • Respond to questions in person and by phone
  • Organize work for timely completion
  • Follow proper cleaning and sanitizing procedures
  • Demonstrate collaborative, respectful, and productive work habits
  • Remain constantly alert and aware of any workplace hazards and follow the safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents
  • Abide by City and department administrative directives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and regular, reliable, and punctual attendance
  • Provide management with sound, positive advice and information concerning the incumbents area of responsibility
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities

Physical Demands Physical demands include but are not limited to:

  • Sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, and using hands and fingers to operate equipment
  • Frequently handles animals of all sizes, occasionally weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Working conditions include continuous interaction with animals, including some with questionable health and temperament, and exposure to inclement weather, temperature extremes, odors, fumes, cleaning chemicals, and animal waste

Licenses, Certifications, & Special Requirements

  • Texas Class C drivers license with a good driving record as measured by the Citys evaluation system
  • Required to perform shift work in a rotation of days, evenings, and nights, including weekends and holidays

Work Environment Work is performed in an animal shelter. There is continuous interaction with animals, including some with questionable health and temperament, and exposure to inclement weather, temperature extremes, odors, fumes, cleaning chemicals, and animal waste. The noise level in the work environment may be moderate to loud depending on working conditions.

Equipment Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control authority or approval of the design, working ranges, or limitations of those items. The employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
