The Animal Control Deputy is responsible for the effective operations of conducting animal, litter, and rabies control activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrol designated areas of Florence County in car, by foot, and other means to enforce local and state animal control laws and ordinances to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the public and animals. To preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes as it directly relates to the animal control function.
  • Responds to calls for service are issued by central dispatch as well as other calls for service on the call list.
  • Investigates complaints and issue tickets/citations to offenders.
  • Set traps for stray animals when citizen complaints are received. Check on traps that have been set to capture strays in a timely manner.
  • Assists in animal cruelty investigations.
  • Notifies DHEC of animal bites and quarantines those animals per DHEC regulations.
  • Reponds to and investigates litter complaints and litter dump sites.
  • Transports inmates to work area and supervises the inmates litter removal program.
  • Instructs the public on the importance of rabies vaccination.
  • Initiate and complete reports, legal documents, and other required paperwork; prepare a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed; prepare investigative reports and case information.
  • Present and testify in cases before Court.
  • Renders First Aid and CPR to the injured as needed.
  • Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars; participates in continuous training to enhance law enforcement skills including firearms proficiency, defensive driving skills, apprehension and arrest techniques, investigative skills, general law enforcement skills and animal control.
  • Maintain a high personal standard of physical fitness and nutrition with an ability to respond appropriately to stressful and/or challenging situations.
  • Remains abreast of all federal and state laws, and ordinances of the County of Florence.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle to ensure proper care, cleaning, and maintenance.

Non-Essential Functions: 

  • Performs all other related duties as required.

Qualifications: Education and Work Experience

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license at the time of hire.
  • Requires a high school diploma.
  • Must complete and obtain a Class III Advanced certification within one year of hire. The required training and education will be held at our Local Training facility located in Florence County. Once this training is complete, the deputy will be required to take a Firearms test and a cumulative test in Columbia at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation to include a polygraph examination.
  • Read and comprehend police-related technical and legal information.
  • Document (write) incidents and actions accurately, completely, and legibly using standard forms; must also document using computer software/programs.
  • Communicate effectively using both spoken (in English) and non-verbal methods.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, research, presentation, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to collaboratively and maintain effective relationships with all types of people including those within the office, immediate supervisor, inmates, other agencies, other professions, S.C. DHEC, medical facilities, hospitals, attorneys and general members of the community.
  • Skilled in the operation of patrol vehicles and handles firearms.
  • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Follow complex rules or systems, using professional literature and technical reports; or enforce laws, rules, regulations, or ordinances.
  • Organized and detailed-orientated with strong level of accuracy to multi-task.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software to include Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
  • Use computers for data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, or custom application.
  • Have a working knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations related to the duties and responsibilities of their position.

  • Must pass the pre-employment Physical Agility Test (PAT).
  • Frequently required to perform basic physical activities and communicate effectively to carry out essential job duties.
  • Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 25 lb. objects regularly.
  • Correctable vision sufficient to read monitors, labels, and drive safely.

Sheriff Application Requirements & Phases

You will need to include a copy of the following information with your application. If you do not have it available at this time, you will have the option to save your application and return to it after the documentation is collected.

  • Copy of your birth certificate
  • Copy of your High School Diploma
  • Three (3) letters of reference
  • Copy of any current law enforcement officer certification
  • Copy of your Social Security Card
  • Copy of your valid Driver’s License
  • A certified copy of your driving record(s) (Driving records must cover all states where a license was held over the past ten (10) years; South Carolina residents, please provide a 10-year certified driving record)
    * you may go by a SCDMV location and get a copy of your South Carolina driving history. If you have, in the past ten (10) years, had an out of state driver’s license, you must contact the state’s appropriate agency)
  • Copy of DD-214 for applicants with prior military service
  • List ALL previous addresses since age eighteen (18)
  • List of ALL social media accounts and usernames
  • List ALL employment history for the past ten (10) years
  • List four (4) additional references in addition to the three (3) letters of reference
  • Completion of drug history questionnaire form

Applicant Phases

Phase 1: Receipt of the completed application with ALL requested documents and verification of driving record.
Phase 2: Written examination, physical agility test and firearms testing. If successful, the applicant will continue to phase 3.
Phase 3: Polygraph, background investigation, panel interview, psychological examination, drug screening, medical exam and Sheriff’s interview.

Upon the satisfactory completion of the requirements listed above, you will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of one (1) year. During that year, as vacancies occur, you may be called in to interview for various entry-level positions. If you are interviewed but not hired, you will be placed back on the eligibility list.
