POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Animal Control Division of the Alamogordo Police Department, in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- High School diploma or GED;
- Experience working with animals in a shelter, kennel, or veterinary setting,
- Valid New Mexico Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo;
- Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Required during tenure:
- Must obtain and/or maintain certification(s) necessary to perform Essential Duties effectively and safely, including but not limited to:
o Within sixty (12) months from date of hire: Euthanasia certification from the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine.
Desired:
- Current Euthanasia Certification from the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine;
- Experience with facility maintenance or custodial service.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties
- The Animal Control Kennel Officer is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the facility, animal care, and customer service;
- Follow daily, weekly, and monthly task lists; clean, disinfect and maintain facility to a high standard of cleanliness by sweeping, mopping, disposal of garbage, dusting, kennel/cages cleaning including cat boxes, windows, doors, walls, sinks, tubs, and all other areas needing cleaning inside the facility;
- Creates files for all new animals in computer system;
- Assists in maintaining files for all animals, including shot records;
- Provide a high standard of daily care for animals, including feeding, watering, walking, and reporting health and/or behavioral problems;
- Administers basic first aid to animals;
- Perform Euthanasia procedures to ensure safe & humane treatment, and ascertain that death has occurred;
- Tracks inventory levels for appropriate stock levels and re-ordering purposes;
- Responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of towels, blankets, and other items needing laundry care through washing and drying;
- Maintain the security and safety of animals through proper handling when walking, opening cages, and otherwise providing necessary care for the animals;
- Assist with maintaining the outside appearance of the facility by weeding and picking up trash as needed;
- Coordinates volunteer activities within the Animal Control Center;
- Assure proper maintenance of necessary records related to animal impounding and care;
- Assist with adoption events in the community;
- Works closely with community rescue groups;
- Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
- Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens to ensure high operational and service standards; and
- Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES
- May be required outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays;
- Must obtain and maintain required license(s) and/or certification(s);
- Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during performance of duties; and
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
