Position Overview

Salary Range: $27.0528/hour. Salary reflects Step 5 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent on the applicants education, experience, and training.

Work Schedule: Four 10-hour shifts per week. Specific days to be determined.

Job Summary:

Animal Control Officer is responsible for participating in the more complex and difficult work of animal control staff. The officer is also responsible for performing a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Scope of Responsibility:

Incumbents normally are familiar with department or functional operations and are able to work with minimal assistance. Working under limited supervision, incumbents perform work requiring some interpretation of data and must make decisions considering objectives. Incumbents may provide work direction or training to less experienced staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Animal Control

  • Patrols assigned areas; captures and impounds unlicensed, stray and uncontrolled animals; removes dead animals from roadways.
  • Snares animals with net, rope or other devices; cages or secures animals in Animal Control vehicles; supplies food, water, and care to detained animals; notifies owners of impounded animals.
  • Examines detained animals for illness or injury; delivers animals to veterinarian for medical treatment.
  • Identifies and records breed and gender of animals. Administers inoculations to animals.
  • Euthanizes animals; disposes of remains.

Public Service

  • Investigates complaints concerning animals creating nuisances and takes appropriate action; writes reports.
  • Responds to calls regarding animal bites; quarantines animals for rabies observation. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

Law Enforcement

  • Investigates reports of animal abuse; issue warnings and citations for violations of ordinances; testifies in court.
  • Examines dog licenses for validity; issue warnings or summonses to delinquent owners.
  • Assists Police Department in handling animals involved in police activities and cases.

Performs Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire, State license as a Euthanasia Technician
  • A valid Montana driver's license is required or must be able to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test, and a Federal and State criminal history background check

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • One (1) year of working with animals

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Requires heavy physical effort, moving over 60 pounds, where effort is intermittent, less than 15% of the time. Requires moderate attention to detail or deadlines frequently (between 45% and 70% of the time). Work requires exposure to multiple disagreeable elements, none of which are of greater than moderate intensity, on an occasional basis (between 15% and 45% of the time).
