Position Summary

The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) is seeking a dedicated and motivated Animal Keeper to join our Animal Care team. This position supports the daily husbandry, welfare, and management of a diverse collection of wild and exotic animals, including rare and endangered species. The Animal Keeper contributes to excellence in animal welfare, conservation science, education, and guest engagement consistent with the mission and standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Animal Care & Husbandry

  • Provide daily care to animals, ensuring optimal health, welfare, and well-being.
  • Prepare, measure, and distribute appropriate diets; maintain sanitary food prep areas and water systems.
  • Monitor and document food and water intake; report changes per established protocols.
  • Clean and maintain animal enclosures through sweeping, hosing, scrubbing, raking, and waste removal.
  • Weigh animals, collect data, and maintain accurate records.

Animal Health & Observation

  • Observe animals for signs of illness, injury, or abnormal behavior; report concerns to supervisory or veterinary staff.
  • Monitor and report pest or insect infestations.
  • Document behavioral observations such as feeding, breeding, nesting, and social interactions.

Behavioral Management & Enrichment

  • Participate in enrichment programs that promote species-appropriate behaviors.
  • Assist with operant conditioning and animal training programs.
  • Support propagation and behavioral management initiatives.

Guest Engagement & Education

  • Deliver engaging, accurate, and conservation-focused information to guests.
  • Support interpretive programming and meaningful visitor experiences.

Animal Husbandry & Management

  • Knowledge of species-specific husbandry practices, nutrition, and enclosure maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain high standards for sanitation, safety, and biosecurity.

  • Understanding of animal welfare principles, including the Five Domains model.
  • Commitment to ethical animal care and continuous welfare improvement.

Animal Behavior & Training

  • Basic understanding of animal learning theory and operant conditioning.

  • Strong observational skills to identify behavioral and health changes.
  • Ability to assess situations and communicate findings effectively.

  • Adherence to institutional safety protocols when working with animals, tools, and chemicals.
  • Awareness of zoonotic disease prevention and workplace hazards.

Conservation & Education

  • Understanding of AZA's conservation mission and the role of accredited institutions.
  • Ability to engage the public in conservation messaging and environmental stewardship.

Professionalism & Accountability

  • Demonstrates reliability, attention to detail, and strong work ethic.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Experience Required

Experience in animal care or related field (paid or unpaid, including internships and volunteer work). Strong observational, organizational, and record-keeping skills. Ability to follow protocols and maintain high standards of care. Passion for wildlife conservation and animal welfare.

Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods. Ability to work in outdoor conditions and exposure to environmental elements. Working Conditions Indoor and outdoor work in all weather conditions. Exposure to animal odors, noise, chemicals, and biological hazards. Potential exposure to bites, scratches, parasites, and zoonotic diseases. Conditions of Employment Pass pre-employment background investigation. May be required to complete a probationary period. Must maintain direct deposit capability. Compliance with Selective Service requirements (if applicable).
