Job Description
The Animal Protection Officer is responsible for enforcing animal-related ordinances and state laws while ensuring the humane treatment, safety, and welfare of animals within the City. This position performs field and facility-based work involving animal control, cruelty investigations, public education, and emergency response. The Animal Protection Officer serves as a public-facing representative of the City, responding to citizen complaints, providing guidance on animal regulations, and promoting responsible pet ownership. Duties require sound judgment, compassion, and the ability to work independently in potentially hazardous and emotionally challenging situations. Duties and responsibilities may be modified at any time to meet the needs of the organization
Job Functions
- Enforce City ordinances and applicable state laws related to animal control, licensing, vaccinations, cruelty, and public safety.
- Respond to calls for service involving stray, aggressive, injured, or deceased animals.
- Investigate reports of animal cruelty, neglect, bites, and dangerous animals; collect evidence and prepare detailed reports.
- Safely handle all animals using Fear Free procedures and positive reinforcement techniques as trained, using approved techniques and equipment.
- Assist with animal intake which may include, physical exams, blood draw, administering vaccines, or running diagnostic testing.
- Issue warnings, citations, and notices of violation as authorized.
- Testify in court regarding animal-related cases when required.
- Provide public education on animal welfare laws, responsible pet ownership, and community safety.
- Assist during emergencies, disasters, and evacuations involving animals.
- Perform basic animal health assessments and coordinate veterinary care when necessary.
- Maintain accurate records, case files, and documentation using City systems.
- Operate City vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
- Coordinate with law enforcement, veterinary staff, and other agencies as needed.
- Interact professionally with the public to provide education regarding animal laws, responsible pet ownership, and community safety
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in animal control, animal care, law enforcement support, or a related field; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Ability to obtain required certifications related to animal control or humane enforcement within a specified timeframe.
- Valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) or more years of experience in animal control or animal welfare enforcement.
- Knowledge of Texas animal laws and municipal ordinances.
- Experience in cruelty investigations or court testimony.
- Certification as an Animal Control Officer or equivalent.
Preferred Licenses or Certifications
- Humane Euthanasia certificate recognized by TSDHS.
- Fear Free Certification
