Animal Scientist

The Animal Scientist applies animal nutrition and feed science to direct all aspects of JLC's feed-pad operation, reporting to the Feedlot Manager. This is a professional oversight role responsible for the nutritional integrity of the ration program, the preservation and quality of feedstuffs, and the efficient direction of the feed-pad team — translating nutrition and inventory data into daily feeding decisions that support herd health and performance. Core responsibilities include:

• Direct all aspects of feed-pad operations, applying animal nutrition principles to ensure rations are formulated, delivered, and adjusted appropriately to support herd health and performance

• Plan and oversee bay preparation for incoming feedstuffs, using inventory and quality data to manage rotation and organization of the pad

• Manage feedstuff inventory across all commodities, analyzing usage trends to forecast needs and direct restocking before shortfalls occur

• Apply feed preservation science to oversee the covering and uncovering of piles (silage, etc.), protecting nutritional quality and minimizing spoilage

• Oversee silage packing to proper density, applying fermentation science to ensure sound preservation and storage life

• Maintain and analyze hay inventory data, coordinating usage against ration requirements across the operation

• Direct feed wagon scheduling to ensure rations are delivered accurately and on a consistent timeline

• Oversee ration mixing to ensure accuracy against established feeding programs

• Coordinate service and maintenance scheduling for feed wagons and loaders to minimize equipment downtime

• Lead and schedule the feed-pad team, directing work to maximize efficiency and ensure feeding operations run on time

• Apply working knowledge of efficient grain-handling and movement practices to support feed-pad logistics

• Apply animal nutrition and wellness principles to monitor feeding program effectiveness and flag herd health or performance concerns to the Feedlot Manager

• Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, Agribusiness, or a closely related field (or foreign equivalent) preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered

• Demonstrated knowledge of ruminant nutrition principles and ration formulation

• Professional experience overseeing feed-pad, feedlot, or livestock feeding operations

• Working knowledge of silage fermentation science, packing density, and storage/preservation practices

• Familiarity with feed wagon, loader, and related equipment operation and maintenance scheduling

• Proven ability to lead and schedule a team to maximize efficiency

• Ability to analyze inventory and usage data to inform planning and forecasting decisions

• Physically able to work outdoors in varying conditions as needed to oversee feed-pad operations

• Full-time, year-round position

• Reports to Phillip, Feedlot Manager

• Based at the JLC feed-pad
