Position Overview

If you are passionate about animal welfare and enjoy making a difference in your community, we invite you to join the Cumberland County Animal Services team. As an Animal Shelter Attendant, you will provide compassionate daily care for shelter animals by feeding, cleaning and maintaining kennels, administering prescribed medications, and supporting animal enrichment and socialization. Youll also assist pet owners and potential adopters while helping maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming shelter environment that promotes the health, well-being, and successful adoption of animals in our care.

Examples of Duties

  • Clean, disinfect, sterilize, and stock animal kennels while maintaining proper sanitation and biosecurity practices.
  • Receive incoming animals by vaccinating, weighing, photographing, assessing condition, and entering information into Chameleon.
  • Safely handle, restrain, transport, and secure animals, including aggressive or medically compromised animals.
  • Monitor animal health, administer medications as directed, and maintain accurate medication and treatment records.
  • Perform daily animal inventories and maintain accurate records of animal locations, impounds, and incidents.
  • Provide daily care, exercise, socialization, and behavioral assessments to support animal health and adoptability.
  • Assist the public with locating lost pets, animal care questions, and other customer service needs.
  • Support adoption efforts by assisting prospective adopters, educating them on animal care, and participating in outreach and adoption events.
  • Train and support volunteers during shelter operations and community outreach activities.
  • Monitor and maintain inventories of animal food, medications, vaccines, cleaning supplies, and other shelter materials.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and a willingness to work with animals in shelter environment.

Employees must obtain:

  • Fear Free Shelter certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Employees must complete pre-exposure rabies vaccine series within two (2) weeks of hire or show proof of prior vaccination against rabies and have an adequate titer.

Management Preference:

One (1) year experience in shelter, boarding kennel or veterinary office environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of animal breeds, animal temperament, and handling of animals

  • Knowledge of animal husbandry and the methods of safely and humanely handling animals

  • Ability to build and maintain a working relationship with co-workers to ensure the safe and proper care of each animal throughout the facility

  • Ability to learn animal breeds and behavior and modern office practices and procedures

  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, exercising tact and courtesy with animal owners and the general public

  • Ability to learn how to maintain accurate records and reports concerning animals

  • Ability to communicate orally and be able to multi-task

  • Ability to handle emotional stress of working with unwanted/abused animals

  • Ability to be a fast and efficient problem solver during high stress situations

  • Ability in the use of two-way radios to communicate with fellow shelter staff

  • Ability to lift various weights/sizes of animals on a daily basis

Conditions of Employment:

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record. If your drivers license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC drivers license within 60 days of hire.

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment.
