Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA


Position Summary:
The Animal Technician supports laboratory animal care and research operations within a university laboratory animal resource program. The position is responsible for daily animal care, room sanitation, animal health monitoring, record keeping, equipment operation, and general animal husbandry in accordance with established procedures, applicable laws, and federal and state regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals, including rodents and other species as assigned.
• Change animal cages and racks and provide food and water according to established procedures.
• Maintain animal housing areas, equipment, and workspaces in a clean and sanitary condition.
• Operate cage washers and autoclaves for cage cleaning and sterilization.
• Monitor animal health and promptly identify, document, and report health concerns.
• Maintain accurate records, including per-diem records, animal health surveillance, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, and animal receipt/disposition records.
• Perform animal husbandry activities and technical procedures as required.
• Communicate animal health and facility concerns to veterinary staff, researchers, supervisors, and compliance personnel.
• Follow standard operating procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Use computers, email, barcode scanners, PDAs, electronic health-surveillance systems, online training platforms, and electronic timesheet systems.
• Work independently or as part of a team and promptly identify, address, and report operational issues.
• Maintain compliance with workplace rules, including restrictions on eating, drinking, and smoking in designated areas.
• Wear required personal protective equipment, including protective clothing, eyewear, safety shoes, gloves, masks, and respirators when assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• At least 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation/equipment operations experience.
• High school diploma/GED.
• Basic computer and email skills.
• General knowledge of feeding, caging, housing, and space requirements for multiple laboratory animal species.
• Knowledge of animal health monitoring and the ability to recognize and report health concerns.
• Knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents.
• Ability to operate or learn to operate cage washers and autoclaves.
• General knowledge of federal and regulatory requirements applicable to laboratory animal care.
• Ability to follow instructions, established procedures, and workplace rules.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Education/Experience:
Candidates should meet one of the following:

• High school diploma/GED, training equivalent to Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification, and 1 year of relevant animal care experience; or
• High school diploma/GED and 2 years of animal care experience with an appropriate animal species; or
• Equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and work on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day.
• Ability to push and pull heavy objects.
• Ability to safely lift and/or move loads up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to wear required PPE throughout the workday.

Preferred Candidate Profile:
Candidates with prior laboratory animal care, vivarium, animal research, veterinary, animal husbandry, cage-wash, or biomedical research facility experience are strongly preferred. Experience working under regulated laboratory animal-care environments and familiarity with AALAS/ALAT standards will be advantageous.

Work Schedule:

• Onsite, Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM
