POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Alamogordo Police Department (APD) in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Be a United States Citizen;
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;
  • Must be at least 21 years of age on the date of application, or at least 19 years of age and have satisfactorily completed one year of service as a Police Service Aide. Applicants must be recommended by the Chain of Command;
  • Successfully pass the police officer physical agility test within the specified time limits;
  • Successfully pass police officer entry-level written examination;
  • No felony convictions or guilty pleas, including pleas of nolo contendere;
  • No violations within the past three (3) years of federal, state, or local laws related to:

o Aggravated assault or theft

o Driving while intoxicated (DWI/DUI)

o Controlled substances

o Other offenses involving moral turpitude

  • Must not have been discharged from the United States Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions;
  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo;
  • If selected,

o Must pass a thorough APD background check; and

o Must successfully pass a medical exam that meets physical requirements, a drug screening test, a psychological exam, a polygraph test or a voice stress analysis, a hearing test, and an eye test.

Required during tenure:

  • Must obtain and/or maintain certification(s) necessary to perform Essential Duties effectively and safely, including but not limited to:

o Within twelve (12) months from the date of hire, the employee must obtain Police Officer certification through the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy (NMLEA) by successfully completing an NMLEA-approved academy. Certification must be achieved within 365 days unless extenuating circumstances apply (e.g., injury, military service, or other statutorily recognized allowances); and

o Following NMLEA certification, Police Officers are required to successfully complete assigned field training.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties

  • Performs routine and complex police officer responsibilities by responding to emergency, non-emergency and routine calls; patrols the city for traffic safety, arrests criminal suspects, issues citations, serves warrants, subpoenas, civil papers, and other legal documents promptly and accurately, assists stranded motorists, provides aid to those in danger of physical harm; safeguards property; and enforcing Federal, State, and Local laws and ordinances;
  • Investigates crimes, including securing crime scenes, performing surveillance, preparing required documentation, collecting evidence, questioning witnesses and victims;
  • Identifies criminal offenders and criminal activity, apprehends offenders when appropriate, and participates in subsequent court proceedings to testify and provide expert opinion;
  • Conducts all levels of crime prevention, including identifying crime locations and type, and executing crime prevention tactics and programs;
  • Prepares law enforcement reports associated with offenses and arrests and enters data into the computer system;
  • Investigates crashes and traffic complaints, performs vehicle, personnel, and property identification checks;
  • Provides preliminary first aid and CPR before EMS arrival; assists the City ambulance contractor in lifting and moving patients and renders first aid to injured persons;
  • Participates in daily meetings and briefings to disseminate information regarding current operational status with other divisions within the department and with other law enforcement agencies;
  • Facilitates the movement of vehicle and pedestrian traffic by providing security and escort services during special events, funerals, parades, fairs, and wide loads;
  • Conducts special enforcement programs, including directing DWI interdictions, implementing specific patrol techniques, and inspecting seat belt usage and regulation compliance;
  • Mediates landlord/tenant, domestic relations, and customer/retailer disputes;
  • Transports prisoners to courts and detention facilities;
  • Assists with various community relations projects and public awareness programs through school programs, the media, publications, and public appearances to enhance public awareness of APD operations and procedures;
  • Provides safety and security services and related functions at various public and private schools as outlined in APD Rules and Regulations;
  • Responds to, participates in, and trains for aircraft emergencies, personnel rescue, and evacuation;
  • Receives walk-in calls and citizen inquiries at the police station, secures the APD records area, coordinates with the Intoxilyzer Key Operators;
  • Coordinates with other departmental components and other agencies regarding court appearances and CYFD referrals;
  • May provide courtroom security;
  • Assists in planning and implementation of activities involving department training;
  • Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
  • Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens to ensure high operational and service standards; and
  • Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES

  • Must obtain and maintain required license(s) and/or certification(s);
  • Will be required to take and subscribe to an oath supporting the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution and the Laws of the State of New Mexico, and the Ordinances of the City of Alamogordo;
  • Will be required to work variable shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays;
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties; and
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
