API Operations Engineer
ROLE
We need an experienced API Operations Engineer at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This position supports the IRS Enterprise API Gateway Modernization and Operations (EAGMO) effort, providing round the clock operational support for the agency's gateway platform. In this role, you will provide 24x7x365 monitoring and production operations across the legacy and new gateway environments, perform incident triage and P1 response within ServiceNow SLAs, deliver root cause analysis, execute patch and vulnerability remediation support, maintain performance dashboards and reporting, run backup/restore and DR testing, and perform post change smoke testing. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides 24x7x365 monitoring of the EAG platform and executes day-to-day production operations across the legacy IBM webMethods environment, the new API Gateway product, and any approved dual-run period.
  • Performs incident triage and response consistent with the 30-minute ticket assignment and 4-hour resolution target for P1 incidents, escalating and documenting per ServiceNow requirements.
  • Delivers root cause analysis for P1 incidents within 5 business days and drives corrective/preventive action to reduce recurrence.
  • Executes patch and vulnerability remediation support in accordance with IRS timelines and POA&M requirements (while IRS retains cybersecurity risk-acceptance authority).
  • Maintains performance dashboards, monitors latency/throughput/error-rate/availability metrics, and produces the Monthly O&M Performance Report and Quarterly Trend Analysis Report.
  • Executes backup/restore procedures and quarterly restoration testing, and supports IRS disaster recovery exercises.
  • Performs post-change smoke testing and operational readiness validation following production changes, incident remediations, or currency events.

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
  • 7 years of experience performing similar duties to this role
  • Experience with 24x7 production support, incident triage, ServiceNow, RCA, monitoring, patch/vulnerability remediation support, backup/restore, DR support, operational reporting, and production readiness within approved EAG boundaries.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field
  • MBI is preferred

LOCATION
  • Remote – Preferred to be based in National Capital Region

CLEARANCE
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident is required
  • Ability to obtain IRS Minimum Background Investigation security clearance

WORK HOURS
  • 40 hours per week
  • 8 hours per day

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION

COMPENSATION
  • Salary range: $120,000 – $140,000
